The Philippines\u2019 <\/span>Cabalian<\/span> Bay<\/span> is <\/span>beautiful<\/span> on a<\/span> calm <\/span>eveni<\/span>ng <\/span>in October<\/span>, <\/span>its<\/span> still <\/span>waters fringed <\/span>with<\/span> mountains and <\/span>mangroves<\/span>. <\/span>The<\/span> wealth <\/span>of<\/span> natural resources<\/span> in this region<\/span> contributes<\/span> significantly to <\/span>local livelihoods, food security, and economic development<\/span>. <\/span>Yet<\/span>, <\/span>these natural resources are under threat. <\/span>N<\/span>atural <\/span>disasters<\/span>,<\/span> including mudslides, <\/span>typhoons<\/span>,<\/span> and floods<\/span>,<\/span> have <\/span>caused <\/span>devastating losses of life and livelihoods in the past 20 years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fishing<\/span>\u2014<\/span>once a primary source of income<\/span>\u2014<\/span>is at risk, with <\/span>significant<\/span> decrease<\/span>s<\/span> in<\/span> fish <\/span>populations due<\/span> to overfishing.<\/span> All the <\/span>while<\/span>,<\/span> mangrove deforestation has fragmented habitats and <\/span>degraded coastal ecosystem health<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

As climate change intensifies the risk of future disasters and loss of biodiversity in the region, the community is looking for a new source of livelihood to help build a more resilient and sustainable future. And, they have found a solution in seaweed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On a recent trip<\/span> to the Philippines<\/span>, I <\/span>visited <\/span>a<\/span> <\/span>seaweed farm in <\/span>Cabalian<\/span> Bay<\/span><\/span><\/a> that<\/span> EDF<\/span> helped <\/span>establish<\/span> in <\/span>2024<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> The<\/span> project not only <\/span>seeks<\/span> to <\/span>support local livelihoods <\/span>but also to<\/span> serve as a model for <\/span>sustainable seaweed farming to<\/span> be implemented by<\/span> other communities<\/span> in <\/span>the region<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why <\/span>seawee<\/span>d<\/span>? <\/span>Seaweed rapidly <\/span>draws down<\/span> carbon as it grows,<\/span> with the <\/span>potential to <\/span>act as a <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>natural climate solution<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> Seaweed is more than just a food, <\/span><\/span>certain seaweed products<\/span><\/span> have the potential to store carbon<\/span> long-term (<\/span>e.g.<\/span> construction materia<\/span>ls)<\/span> or <\/span>provide<\/span> green<\/span>er<\/span> alternatives to <\/span>high-<\/span>pollution products like <\/span>fertilizers, <\/span>fuels<\/span>,<\/span> and plastics<\/span>.<\/span> Global demand for seaweed is<\/span> growing rapidly, offering <\/span>coastal <\/span>communities <\/span>a <\/span>new livelihood that <\/span>benefit<\/span>s<\/span> people and nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> far<\/span>m <\/span>in <\/span>Cabalian<\/span> Bay <\/span>is<\/span> now<\/span> run by <\/span>T<\/span>he<\/span> Juana<\/span>s<\/span> Lipanto<\/span> Association<\/span>,<\/span> a<\/span> community-based <\/span>organization<\/span> composed<\/span> primarily <\/span>of<\/span> women, <\/span>who view seaweed farming as a potential source of supplementary income for their families<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The success of the Juanas <\/span>Lipanto<\/span> Association is already <\/span>evident<\/span>. This December, they earned their first income and bought five 50kg bags of rice that were shared within the community. They plan to grow more than 10 times as much seaweed at the farm in 2025, increasing income and food security for their membe<\/span>rs and their families<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Members of <\/span>The<\/span> Juanas <\/span>Lipanto<\/span> Association<\/span> attend<\/span> trainings<\/span> from<\/span> <\/span>Coast 4C<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> a Philippines supplier of responsibly sourced seaweed<\/span> and <\/span>a <\/span><\/span>2024 <\/span>Earthshot<\/span> Prize finalist<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/a> where they learn how to conduct farm operations, gro<\/span>w <\/span>seawe<\/span>ed<\/span>,<\/span> and manage the business aspects of the farm. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

B<\/span>y providing <\/span>these <\/span>training programs and buying seaweed at a premium price <\/span>relative<\/span> to the market rate<\/span>, <\/span>Coast 4C is actively building a larger, more reliable network of seaweed suppliers and increasing the share of profits from <\/span>global <\/span>seaweed markets received by <\/span>small-scale <\/span>growers in the Philippines. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the day of my visit, <\/span>the <\/span>members<\/span> of <\/span>Juana<\/span>s<\/span> Lipanto<\/span> Association <\/span>w<\/span>ere<\/span> preparing new lines of seaweed for planting. <\/span>They patiently helped me as I joined in and clumsily <\/span>tied<\/span> the small pieces of seaweed to the line.\u00a0<\/span><\/span> The work was <\/span>done<\/span> in a social manner with lots of laugh<\/span>ing, chatting, and<\/span> a shared lunch, <\/span>eaten from banana leaves<\/span> laid out as a <\/span>platter<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The livelihood initiative has also been supported by the Local Government Unit<\/span> (LGU<\/span>)<\/span>, which has agreed to contribute funding to the growth of seaweed farming in the area.<\/span> This support is a testament to the work done by <\/span>EDF\u2019s local team<\/span> to <\/span>build relationships and trust with members of the LGU, including the mayor<\/span>, who <\/span>awarded<\/span> EDF<\/span> with<\/span> a<\/span> 2024 <\/span>Plaque of Recognitio<\/span>n f<\/span>or their <\/span>dedication and support for <\/span>the wellbeing of <\/span>local <\/span>communities and ecosystems<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>n partnership<\/span> with <\/span>local government,<\/span> EDF helped <\/span>facilitate<\/span> a <\/span>l<\/span>earning<\/span> e<\/span>xchange in Bohol <\/span>for the <\/span>Juana<\/span>s<\/span> Lipanto<\/span> Association and LGU leaders<\/span>. Th<\/span>e goal was<\/span> to e<\/span>m<\/span>p<\/span>ower<\/span> these groups with practical knowledge on sustainable seaweed farming and business skills<\/span>,<\/span> such<\/span> as<\/span> training in<\/span> Community-managed Savings and Credit Association<\/span> (<\/span>CoMSCA<\/span>)<\/span>, a s<\/span>av<\/span>ings mechanism that enables rural communities to manage their own savings and credit system<\/span>s.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The members of the <\/span>Juana<\/span>s<\/span> Lipanto<\/span> Association also visited<\/span> nearby farms, where <\/span>they heard<\/span> firsthand <\/span>from <\/span>Bohol farmers<\/span> how<\/span> seaweed farming transformed their <\/span>lives a<\/span>nd<\/span> how they dealt with challe<\/span>nges on the way to <\/span>establish<\/span>ing<\/span> a<\/span> successful<\/span> local<\/span> seaweed<\/span> industry.<\/span> As a result, they left inspired and better equipped to build a strong seaweed industry in <\/span>Cabalian<\/span> Bay<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I <\/span>departed<\/span>, I reflected on how <\/span>local<\/span> collaborations and knowledge sharing <\/span>contributed directly to<\/span> community resilience<\/span> and livelihoods<\/span>. <\/span>I was inspired by the work of EDF\u2019s local <\/span>team <\/span>to <\/span>i<\/span>dentify<\/span> partners and build<\/span> strong <\/span>interpersonal relationships<\/span>. This<\/span> was critical to making sure that groups, such as the Juanas <\/span>Lipanto<\/span> Association, would be supported and empowered to continue developing a strong regional seaweed farming sector for a more sustainable future.<\/span> It is <\/span>exciting to see how much progress has been made <\/span>via seaweed farming <\/span>in <\/span>Cabalian<\/span> B<\/span>ay<\/span>, and I <\/span>ca<\/span>n\u2019t<\/span> wait to see how this community thrives in the future.<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
