{"id":7111,"date":"2018-01-25T15:01:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-25T19:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/?p=7111"},"modified":"2018-02-23T15:41:46","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T19:41:46","slug":"new-research-quantifies-growing-threat-plastics-pose-to-coral-reefs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/2018\/01\/25\/new-research-quantifies-growing-threat-plastics-pose-to-coral-reefs\/","title":{"rendered":"New research quantifies growing threat plastics pose to coral reefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7112\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Alamy_Richard-Whitcombe_ImageD1J9RY_purchased-from-artist-for-use.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7112\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Alamy_Richard-Whitcombe_ImageD1J9RY_purchased-from-artist-for-use-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alamy Richard Whitcombe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Plastic waste in the ocean poses a wholly unexpected and serious threat to coral reefs.\u00a0 The results from <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/359\/6374\/460\">new research<\/a> published in <em>Science<\/em> are sobering, but there is hope if we act now to mitigate the most significant threats facing corals and the vulnerable communities who depend on healthy coastal ecosystems for food and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the co-authors, I was greatly surprised at the elevated risk of disease to corals caused by plastic: from 4% in corals without plastic, to 89% in corals with plastic.\u00a0 Given that the study estimated that there are already more than 11 billion plastic items on reefs across the Asia-Pacific region, and that plastic loads in the ocean are expected to grow radically, this is bad news indeed.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The research was led by Dr. Joleah Lamb from the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future at Cornell University, and involved a wide array of coral experts from universities and environmental organizations \u2013 including EDF \u2013 who together surveyed 159 reefs around the Asia-Pacific region, including 124,000 corals to assess the prevalence of plastics and the association of plastics with coral diseases, as part of a larger study on risks to coral reef health.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7115\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Tane_Sinclair-Taylor-8896.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7115\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Tane_Sinclair-Taylor-8896-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Tane_Sinclair-Taylor-8896-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Tane_Sinclair-Taylor-8896-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Tane_Sinclair-Taylor-8896-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tane Sinclair Taylor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Impacts of plastics on coral reef ecosystems<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This study is also one of the first to systematically assess the impact of plastics in the sea at ecosystem scale.\u00a0 While nearly everyone has seen photos of plastic trash inside dead seabirds, or perhaps of a straw in a sea turtle\u2019s nose, actually assessing damage from plastic at ecosystem scale has been difficult.\u00a0 By looking more widely, we have found that the news is indeed as grim as many had feared.<\/p>\n<p>As hotspots of marine biodiversity and an important source of socioeconomic wellbeing for hundreds of millions of people, coral reefs are among the world\u2019s most important ecosystems. Corals are also among the most sensitive, suffering \u2013 as all ocean lovers know \u2013 from bleaching caused by warming waters, overgrowth by algae caused by nutrient pollution and countless other threats.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X1630358X\">greatest threats<\/a> to coral ecosystems are systematic global overfishing and the large-scale impacts of global climate change.\u00a0 Overfishing impacts corals when removal of big fish interrupts ecological processes that maintain reefs (e.g., herbivores that keep down overgrowing algae, or predators that balance out overall fish and invertebrate populations). All of these threats have some experts fearing that only a small percentage of today\u2019s corals will make it through the next few decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reasons for optimism <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, what do we do with this new and additional bad news? Thankfully, several groups are already engaged in reducing rates of plastics\u2019 movement into the ocean. Plus, many organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/50reefs.org\/\">are engaged in addressing<\/a> other threats to reefs, both locally through improved management of marine protected areas (MPAs) and regionally through the systematic identification of reefs with the best chances of making it through the coming coral bottleneck. Others are working to find ways to enhance adaptation in corals to improve their survivability.\u00a0 Still others are focused on strategies to maintain coral germ plasm in laboratories, so corals can be reintroduced into proper temperature zones once the climate-induced bottleneck has passed.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, many others \u2013 including EDF \u2013 are heavily engaged in the hard work of reducing emissions that result in warming and acidification.\u00a0 Without success on reducing emissions, corals are toast.\u00a0 Of course even with success there, waters will continue to warm and acidify for several decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All of those strategies are important, but beg two critical questions: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) What happens to the majority of today\u2019s coral world that may not be in the survival zone?<\/p>\n<p>2) What happens to the people whose livelihoods depend upon these ecosystems?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/douglas-n-rader-phd\/two-creative-approaches-c_b_13495312.html\">We believe<\/a> that the best strategy to address both of these questions \u2013 starting today \u2013 is to enhance the prevalence of all kinds of fish big enough to catch on coral reefs of all degrees of impairment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7114\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Plastic-bottle-wedged-in-the-coral-reef_Dr-Kathryn-Berry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7114\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Plastic-bottle-wedged-in-the-coral-reef_Dr-Kathryn-Berry-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Plastic-bottle-wedged-in-the-coral-reef_Dr-Kathryn-Berry-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Plastic-bottle-wedged-in-the-coral-reef_Dr-Kathryn-Berry-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Plastic-bottle-wedged-in-the-coral-reef_Dr-Kathryn-Berry-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2018\/01\/Plastic-bottle-wedged-in-the-coral-reef_Dr-Kathryn-Berry.jpg 1323w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Kathryn Berry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Rebuilding fish populations can help protect ecosystems and people<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The total abundance of big fish has been linked to important factors of reef health around the world. More research is needed to determine whether enhancing fish abundance can establish greater resilience in reefs, or even begin rebuilding reef ecosystem health.<\/p>\n<p>We are in the early stages of researching and demonstrating this link in various places around the coral world, with especially important progress underway in Belize.\u00a0 In Belize, healthy thriving reefs are critical as they support thousands of people who rely on fishing for food and livelihoods, through both the fishing and tourism industries.<\/p>\n<p>Belizeans are transforming their ocean fishing using a \u201cmanaged access approach\u201d that is already yielding positive results for fishing communities based initially on the valuable conch and lobster fisheries.\u00a0 In the crucial next step, fishermen, scientists, managers and other officials are working together to build a systematic management approach for reef-associated finfishes.
