It doesn\u2019t hurt that restaurants, fish markets and grocery stores are awash with Lenten promotions, resulting in the most profitable period for seafood sales.<\/p>\n<p>So why not use this time to get out of your comfort zone?\u00a0 Put down the tuna and salmon and try something new; the seafood market has an abundance of options.\u00a0 \u00a0Additionally, consumers are seeking out local and sustainable seafood like never before, representing some of the hottest trends in the restaurant industry for the past several years.<\/p>\n<p>But which fish are the best to buy? Tools like EDF\u2019s mobile \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/seafood.edf.org\/\">Seafood Selector<\/a>\u00a0and Monterey Bay Aquarium\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seafoodwatch.org\/cr\/seafoodwatch\/web\/sfw_iPhone.aspx\">Seafood Watch app<\/a>\u00a0are great ways to have sustainable seafood recommendations at your fingertips. Some fish pundits like Chef Alton Brown \u2013 host of Good Eats and other programs on the Food Network \u2013 go so far as to encourage consumers to ignore all the labels and just \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/voices.yahoo.com\/alton-brown-speaks-sustainable-seafood-tennessee-11780052.html\">Buy American<\/a>.\u201d In the absence of definitive information, this might be your best option. However, it\u2019s usually a good bet that your fishmonger or server can tell you where their fish is from.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Did you know?<\/h3>\n<p>The average piece of fish can be handled by up to 10-15 people before it gets to your plate. This isn\u2019t inherently bad, especially if it\u2019s coming from remote waters, like Alaska\u2019s Bering Sea. However, more and more seafood lovers want to know who caught their fish, and more importantly, how long it\u2019s taken to get to market. In response, a number of companies, fishermen and nonprofits alike are committed to \u201cshortening the supply chain\u201d between the ocean and your plate. Here\u2019s a sampling of some of our favorites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mygulfwild.com\/\">Gulf Wild<\/a>\u00a0provides individually tagged, traceable and responsibly-caught red snapper and grouper from the Gulf of Mexico.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecofish.com\/\">Ecofish<\/a>\u00a0is one of the first all-sustainable seafood companies. Their products can be found in health food and natural food stores all across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilovebluesea.com\/\">I Love Blue Sea<\/a>\u00a0is a California-based company selling a variety of seafood online and direct to consumers. They recently added Gulf Coast and Chesapeake Bay products too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.docktodish.com\/\">Dock to Dish<\/a>\u00a0is a new startup on the East End of Long Island that delivers fresh, hand-caught Montauk seafood to New York City restaurants and consumers within 24 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sea2table.com\/\">Sea 2 Table<\/a>\u00a0partners with local fishermen from small-scale wild fisheries around the country to get their catch direct to market as fast as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.localcatch.org\/\">Community Supported Fisheries<\/a>\u00a0have sprung up in the last few years in the mold of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture). Basically, you pay a local fisherman upfront for a share of his catch and receive a regular seafood delivery throughout the season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Trash Fish or \u2018underutilized\u2019 or \u2018underappreciated\u2019 seafood species are all the rage right now, and our good friends at Chefs Collaborative are hosting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chefscollaborative.org\/programs\/seafood-solutions\/trash-fish-dinner\/\">a series of dinners<\/a>\u00a0around the country that hope to spread awareness about fish that are sustainably-caught yet undervalued.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s never been easier to find sustainable, healthy seafood that directly benefits local, responsible fishermen.
