That was until a group of commercial fishermen and EDF came together to find a solution.<\/p>\n<p>That solution \u2013 the red snapper catch share program \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/2011\/11\/29\/the-gulf-of-mexico-the-fishermens-success-story\/\">began in 2007<\/a>.\u00a0 Because this program proved successful almost immediately, fishermen were able to expand the program to include grouper and tilefish in 2010.\u00a0 This has helped to make commercial fishing a viable industry again, consumers are able to get fish they love year-round, the amount of wasted fish has dramatically decreased, and once depleted populations are steadily rebuilding.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In response to the BP oil disaster, in 2010 these fishermen and EDF came together again to create Gulf Wild\u2122, a new marketing program for Gulf red snapper, grouper and tilefish.\u00a0 The Gulf Wild\u2122 brand provides consumers with a responsibly caught fish that is safety-tested and guaranteed to be from the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>A compelling part of Gulf Wild\u2122 is that each fish comes with a tracking number and tag that tells you who caught the fish, where it was caught, and even where it was sold.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcoexist.com\/1678138\/gulf-wild-cuts-down-on-seafood-fraud-by-tagging-fish\">Gulf Wild\u2122 has been growing in popularity<\/a>\u00a0since it launched in 2011 and is available in groceries and restaurants across the country.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3829\" style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/07\/smallcmarketfillet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3829\" title=\"Central Market Display\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/07\/smallcmarketfillet-263x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/07\/smallcmarketfillet-263x300.jpg 263w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/07\/smallcmarketfillet-898x1024.jpg 898w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/07\/smallcmarketfillet.jpg 1505w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gulf Wild\u2122 display at an Austin-area Central Market<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a Texan, born and raised, I\u2019m proud to say that Gulf Wild\u2122 seafood is now available at a growing number of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/07\/HEBLocations.pdf\">H-E-B and Central Market locations<\/a> across the state.\u00a0 To those reading this who are not lucky enough to be from Texas, that\u2019s a big deal.\u00a0 H-E-B is deeply rooted in our community and as much a part of our culture as cowboys and longhorn cattle.\u00a0 Moreover, it is one of the largest supermarket chains in the country.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been quite a journey for the fishermen who came together years ago and battled back from the dark days of derby-style\u00a0fishing to being highlighted in the seafood case of stores like H-E-B.<\/p>\n<p>Stories like this can often go overlooked.\u00a0 As we pass through our grocery store, we may not notice what fish are there one month and gone the next.\u00a0 \u00a0What Texans and a growing number of consumers are now seeing are responsibly-caught, authentic red snapper and grouper from the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 Take a moment to learn the story of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/oceans\/gulf-red-snapper-early-model-fisheries\">how that fish came to be in your store<\/a> and how you will know it will be there for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>EDF is proud to be a part of that story and even more proud that an industry-leading company like H-E-B, is now a part of it too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It wasn\u2019t that long ago that the Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishery was on the brink of collapse.\u00a0 The fishermen were stuck in a race-for-fish that was both dangerous and expensive.
