They are a management tool for fisheries that consider the economic, social and biological concerns of stakeholders. Rebuilding fish populations and ensuring stable jobs for fishermen can go hand in hand.<\/p>\n<p>The editorial asserted that in implementing new catch shares <em>\u201cthose with the most at stake \u2013 people who fish for a living \u2013 have a say in how the programs are designed and carried out.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n<p>The most important element to designing any catch share is fishermen.\u00a0 EDF believes that any change in how fisheries are managed should be led by fishermen and is best started by an open conversation not a mandate.\u00a0 Catch share programs, like the ones in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific, were successful because they were built by a coalition of fishermen that participated in the process from beginning to end.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2012-06-27\/teach-an-industry-how-to-fish-and-maybe-it-will-survive.html\">Click here to read the full editorial.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/06\/G8J6730-300x200.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p> On EDFish, we\u2019re often discussing the virtues of catch shares and the progress we\u2019re making working with fishermen to achieve sustainable fisheries.
