at the kickoff.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Navigating the rules of recreational fishing can be difficult sometimes; and most anglers strive to be responsible stewards of the ocean\u2019s resource.\u00a0 That\u2019s why many have avoided fishing our national marine sanctuaries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sanctuaries.noaa.gov\/\">As it turns out, fishing is allowed in the majority of our nation\u2019s marine sanctuaries along with diving, surfing and other recreational activities<\/a>.\u00a0 In fact, anglers can fish in 98% of the designated sanctuaries along our coastlines.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental Defense Fund believes that the best environmental policies find a way, when possible, to protect important resources while maintaining access for individuals or businesses.\u00a0 Our National Marine Sanctuaries are great examples of that, and that\u2019s why we are a proud sponsor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/sanctuaryclassic.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=frontpage&amp;Itemid=1\">National Marine Sanctuary Classic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sanctuaryclassic.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=82&amp;Itemid=112\">The Classic is a free summer-long fishing and photo contest<\/a>\u00a0taking place in four National Marine Sanctuaries: Channel Islands and Monterey Bay, CA on the west coast and the Florida Key, FL and Gray\u2019s Reef, GA on the east coast.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3690\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/06\/photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3690\" alt=\"Everyone gathered in the Florida Keys to kickoff the Classic\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/06\/photo-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All of the people gathered in the Florida Keys to kickoff the Classic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The contest is taking place over the summer, starting this week.\u00a0 Each week there will be an opportunity to <a href=\"http:\/\/sanctuaryclassic.org\/index.php?option=com_k2&amp;view=itemlist&amp;layout=category&amp;task=category&amp;id=6&amp;Itemid=118\">go online and vote for your favorite photos<\/a> of families and kids fishing.\u00a0 The winners will receive prizes and scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>I was proud to attend one of the \u201cKick-off\u201d events in the Florida Keys alongside not only many fellow anglers and families, but representatives from the <a href=\"http:\/\/sportfishingconservancy.org\/\">Sportfishing Conservancy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/administration\/eop\/ceq\">White House Council On Environmental Quality<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">NOAA<\/a>\u00a0and the Department of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>National Marine Sanctuaries are not only important to protecting ocean ecosystems, but important to local economies.\u00a0 The Classic is an opportunity to demonstrate that they are open and ready for everyone to explore and enjoy.\u00a0 Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanctuaryclassic.com\/\">www.sanctuaryclassic.com<\/a>\u00a0today and find out how you can participate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3693\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/06\/smallgroup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3693\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/06\/smallgroup-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/06\/smallgroup-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2012\/06\/smallgroup.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(From L to R) Billy Causey, Southeast Regional Director of National Marine Sanctuaries, Sean Morton, Superintendent of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Eric Schwaab, Acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Conservation and Management, Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Tom Raftican, President of The Sportfishing Conservancy, Jack Sterne, Environmental Defense Fund<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Navigating the rules of recreational fishing can be difficult sometimes;
