{"id":2696,"date":"2011-03-15T18:11:59","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T22:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/?p=2696"},"modified":"2011-03-15T21:37:12","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T01:37:12","slug":"national-panel-releases-recommendations-on-communities-and-catch-shares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/2011\/03\/15\/national-panel-releases-recommendations-on-communities-and-catch-shares\/","title":{"rendered":"National Panel Releases Recommendations on Communities and Catch Share Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2699\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2011\/03\/NPCDFCSP_paper_031511-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2699\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2011\/03\/NPCDFCSP_paper_031511-sm.jpg\" alt=\"Community Dimensions of Fisheries Catch Share Programs\" width=\"235\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2011\/03\/NPCDFCSP_paper_031511-sm.jpg 235w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2011\/03\/NPCDFCSP_paper_031511-sm-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Community Dimensions of Fisheries Catch Share Programs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A national panel on \u201cthe Community Dimensions of Fisheries Catch Share Programs\u201d released its <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecotrust.org\/press\/catch_shares_20110315.html\" target=\"_blank\">recommendations<\/a><\/strong> today.\u00a0 The Panel, convened by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecotrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ecotrust<\/a><\/strong>, found that options for improving communities and fisheries explode under catch shares, but they don\u2019t happen on their own and more work and energy are needed to fully exploit the benefits of catch shares.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the panel\u2019s findings are good news for communities that have suffered under traditional fisheries management.\u00a0 Its findings highlight how well-designed catch shares benefit our fishing communities by enhancing economic development.\u00a0 Under catch shares, there is a menu of options that were never before available to fishing communities.<\/p>\n<p>However, like our brains, we are only using a small percentage of catch shares\u2019 potential.\u00a0\u00a0 Fishermen and other stakeholders can and should learn from past experiences to better implement catch shares.\u00a0 There are myriad ways to design catch shares to maximize benefits for communities.\u00a0 Where these approaches are being used, such as the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccchfa.org\/trust\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Cod Fisheries Trust<\/a><\/strong> and a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/ourinitiatives\/regions\/northamerica\/unitedstates\/california\/howwework\/Central-Coast-Groundfish-Project.xml\" target=\"_blank\">community fishing association<\/a><\/strong> in Central California, communities are benefiting.\u00a0 However, many more communities can benefit from these innovative approaches and in some cases, not all community-focused options have been used in the design of catch share programs.<\/p>\n<p>Fishing communities, fishermen and other stakeholders have opportunities under catch shares that were never available under previous management.\u00a0 We encourage stakeholders to envision their future and design catch shares to achieve their specific goals.\u00a0 There are myriad options, including many of the recommendations highlighted in the Panel report and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/page.cfm?tagID=57607\" target=\"_self\">Catch Share Design Manual<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2011\/03\/NPCDFCSP_paper_031511-sm.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A national panel on \u201cthe Community Dimensions of Fisheries Catch Share Programs\u201d released its recommendations today.
