{"id":1757,"date":"2010-07-19T13:34:54","date_gmt":"2010-07-19T20:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/?p=1757"},"modified":"2010-07-22T11:18:10","modified_gmt":"2010-07-22T18:18:10","slug":"final-recommendations-interagency-ocean-policy-taskforce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/2010\/07\/19\/final-recommendations-interagency-ocean-policy-taskforce\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama to Announce Final Recommendations of Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force and Creation of a New National Ocean Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_60\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60\" style=\"width: 145px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/\/nfs\/c01\/h03\/mnt\/33703\/domains\/blogs.edf.org\/html\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/\/2009\/05\/dregas3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/\/nfs\/c01\/h03\/mnt\/33703\/domains\/blogs.edf.org\/html\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/\/2009\/05\/dregas3.jpg\" alt=\"Diane Regas, Vice President - EDF Oceans Program\" width=\"145\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diane Regas, Vice President - EDF Oceans Program<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I am eagerly anticipating an event at the White House this afternoon; I am headed over for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2010\/07\/07-19-10_OceanReleaseFINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">official announcement<\/a><\/strong> of the Final Recommendations of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force.\u00a0 I hear that the President will sign an Executive Order to implement the recommendations later this week and create a new National Ocean Council.\u00a0 Once that\u2019s done we will have a new policy to protect our oceans while making use of their abundant resources, and the structural changes in the government designed to make that policy a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Some will probably look at this as a government re-organization, and ask, \u201cWhen do those re-organizations matter?\u201d\u00a0 You might be tempted to answer \u201cnever\u201d, but that\u2019s not true.\u00a0 When President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency the result was cleaner air to breathe, cleaner water to drink and greater safety from toxic pollution for everyone in this country.\u00a0 None of those results happened overnight\u2014some of them even took decades.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement by President Obama\u2019s advisors could have the same positive impact on our oceans as Nixon\u2019s EPA announcement had on our health and environment.\u00a0 And like getting cleaner air and water, much of the work Obama has laid out for the oceans will take decades.\u00a0 The leaders of this effort\u2014especially CEQ Chair Nancy Sutley, Drs. Jane Lubchenco and John Holdren\u2014will be able to look back decades from now and take credit for an important turning point for the oceans.<\/p>\n<p>Because of their vision, the new National Ocean Council will take on the biggest problems our oceans face:\u00a0 how do oceans and coastal communities adapt to climate change?\u00a0 How do we <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/catchsharesnet\" target=\"_self\">restore ecosystems<\/a><\/strong> so that the oceans are healthy and produce healthy seafood?\u00a0 How do we address practices on land that are polluting the oceans, creating vast dead zones?\u00a0 How do we protect the fragile Arctic from the ravages of climate change?<\/p>\n<p>I hope you are as eager as I am to see progress\u2014I want these problems solved tomorrow.\u00a0 But solving big problems right takes longer than that, so I applaud the Administration for taking the time to get the science right, and for creating a place at the table for important stakeholders like commercial and recreational fishermen and native communities.\u00a0 The plans announced today mean every region of our oceans will finally get an integrated, comprehensive blueprint for how to get the most out of the oceans\u2014and make sure the oceans are healthy in long run.<\/p>\n<p>When our children and grandchildren head out to catch their dinner from an abundant ocean and can take their catch home to a house powered by sustainable ocean energy, they\u2019ll have the National Ocean Council to thank for it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Diane Regas is VP for Oceans at the Environmental Defense Fund and was one of the original co-chairs of the Subcommittee for the Integrated Management of Ocean Resources in 2005.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Never miss a post! <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/feeds2.feedburner.com\/EDFish\" target=\"_blank\">Subscribe<\/a><\/strong> to EDFish via a email or a feed reader.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/\/nfs\/c01\/h03\/mnt\/33703\/domains\/blogs.edf.org\/html\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/\/2009\/05\/dregas3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I am eagerly anticipating an event at the White House this afternoon; I am headed over for the official announcement of the Final Recommendations of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force.
