Read this week\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703406604575278662019860160.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_MIDDLETopStories\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Wall Street Journal<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> article on this topic.<\/p>\n<p>EDF\u2019s goal for the Gulf of Mexico is to ensure that people can enjoy fishing, run profitable and safe fishing businesses and eat fresh Gulf seafood, while conserving a healthy ecosystem for the future. Dispersants are a direct threat because scientists don\u2019t know much about how the droplets of oil and dispersant chemicals that float around will affect fish habitat or the marine food chain.<\/p>\n<p>EDF senior scientist Richard Denison asks several basic questions about dispersants on his <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2010\/05\/17\/compounding-the-problem-why-aren%e2%80%99t-we-using-the-safest-and-most-effective-dispersants-in-the-gulf\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Chemicals Blog<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2010\/05\/17\/compounding-the-problem-why-aren%e2%80%99t-we-using-the-safest-and-most-effective-dispersants-in-the-gulf\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Why aren\u2019t we using the safest and most effective dispersants in the Gulf<\/strong><\/span><\/a>?<br \/>\nRichard reports that of the 18 different dispersants the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tested, the two dispersants of choice\u2014 Corexit\u00ae brand\u2014 ranked only 13th and 16th in effectiveness.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2010\/05\/24\/oil-spill-dispersants-what-part-of-%e2%80%9ccontingency-plan%e2%80%9d-did-we-not-understand\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>What part of &#8220;contingency plan&#8221; did we not understand?<\/strong><\/span><\/a><br \/>\nRichard and others takes a look at the federal government\u2019s contingency plan for dispersant use in oil spills and find that several simple questions remain unanswered, including: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2010\/05\/24\/oil-spill-dispersants-what-part-of-%e2%80%9ccontingency-plan%e2%80%9d-did-we-not-understand\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Read more.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do the dispersants actually work to reduce the impact of the oil?<\/li>\n<li>Is it better to disperse the oil or leave it undispersed?<\/li>\n<li>Is the mixture of oil and dispersant more or less toxic than the oil by itself?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom line is that scientists have little understanding of how dispersant chemicals will affect the Gulf and marine life.
