{"id":1213,"date":"2010-05-07T08:51:44","date_gmt":"2010-05-07T15:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/?p=1213"},"modified":"2010-05-10T14:13:05","modified_gmt":"2010-05-10T21:13:05","slug":"ri-fluke-sector-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/2010\/05\/07\/ri-fluke-sector-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Year of Operation Approved for RI Fluke Sector Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1223\" style=\"width: 159px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2010\/05\/EmilieLitsinger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1223\" title=\"Emilie Litsinger, EDF Oceans NE Groundfish Project Manager\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2010\/05\/EmilieLitsinger.jpg\" alt=\"Emilie Litsinger, EDF Oceans NE Groundfish Project Manager\" width=\"159\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emilie Litsinger, EDF Oceans NE Groundfish Project Manager<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This week marks another historical step towards achieving sustainable fisheries management in New England.\u00a0 The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dem.ri.gov\/topics\/mftopics.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Rhode Island\u00a0Department of Environmental Management<\/a><\/strong> (DEM) just approved another year of operation for the Rhode Island Fluke Sector Program.\u00a0 The approval of this year\u2019s program was contingent on the results from the pilot sector last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DEM presented the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dem.ri.gov\/programs\/bnatres\/fishwild\/pdf\/sectpres.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">results of the 2009 program<\/a><\/strong> at a Roundtable meeting in mid-February.\u00a0 The results from the 2009 program were very positive, showing benefits to the resource as well as the fishermen.\u00a0 In fact, the pilot program participants discarded some 98% less fluke than non-participants and were also subject to higher monitoring coverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2019s proven ability to reduce regulatory discards will ultimately lead to an increase in the State of Rhode Island\u2019s quota, benefitting the entire fishery.\u00a0 The results also showed the program\u2019s proven capacity to provide accurate data that facilitates a sound, scientifically based approach to the continuing analysis of sector allocation as a potential strategy for improving the management of fluke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sector participants reported that their participation in the program resulted in enhanced economic efficiencies, an improved ability to make sound and safe business decisions, a cooperative and collaborative orientation among fellow participants, and a heightened sense of well-being and job satisfaction.\u00a0 The University of Rhode Island also conducted an economic analysis on the performance of the sector in 2009.\u00a0 Their preliminary results showed that not only did the sector participants benefit economically from the program, but the non-sector members benefitted positively as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We applaud DEM for continuing to support this worthwhile program and are certain that the results from this year\u2019s program will continue to show positive benefits to both the resource and the fishermen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/edfish\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/18\/files\/2010\/05\/EmilieLitsinger.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This week marks another historical step towards achieving sustainable fisheries management in New England.
