The world, it seems, is on a run-away train \u2013 and yet, we have more reason to feel hopeful than we did a year ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">I\u2019ll explain why that is. But first, let\u2019s have a look at where we are right now.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font: bold 15px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 30px 0px 20px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #444233;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">West Antarctica ice sheet loss is accelerating<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">The latest science shows that ice loss from West Antarctica has been<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/key-ice-sheet-antarctica-losing-everest-sized-volume-ice-every-two-years-study-289669\">increasing<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>nearly three times faster in the past decade than during the previous one \u2013 and much quicker than scientists predicted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">This unprecedented ice loss is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/imageo\/2014\/12\/05\/west-antarctic-ice-sheet-not-collapsed-new-findings-concerning-indicate-climate-crisis\/#.VIXQAjHF-So\">found<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to be occurring because warm ocean water is rising from below and melting the base of the glaciers, dumping huge volumes of additional water \u2013 the equivalent of a Mount Everest every two years \u2013 into the ocean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">If we<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/research-casts-alarming-light-on-decline-of-west-antarctic-ice-sheets\/2014\/12\/04\/19efd3e4-7bbe-11e4-84d4-7c896b90abdc_story.html?hpid=z4\">lost the entire<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>West Antarctic ice sheet, global sea level would rise 11 feet, threatening nearly 13 million people worldwide and affecting more than $2 trillion worth of property.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font: bold 15px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 30px 0px 20px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #444233;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">2014 may be warmest year on record<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">The World Meteorological Organization<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/wmo-warns-lima-delegates-2014-may-be-hottest-year-18392\">announced<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>recently that 2014 is on track to be one of the hottest \u2013 if not the hottest \u2013 year on record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">Continued emissions of heat-trapping gases from energy use, land use, industry, and waste activities contribute to these rising global temperatures.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font: bold 15px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 30px 0px 20px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #444233;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">But there&#8217;s hope<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">At Environmental Defense Fund, we spent a year talking to experts from academia, industry, and the activist community to understand what needs and can be done to address climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">We analyzed the scientific, economic and political landscapes, and we see that it&#8217;s possible to reverse the relentless rise of global greenhouse gas emissions within the next five years. But only if countries devote sufficient attention to the task.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">What may surprise you is that this can be done with current technology, and at a reasonable cost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">There are two critical components of such a strategy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\"><strong>One: A few countries can make big progress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">China, the United States, and Europe account for more than half of all global emissions of carbon dioxide from energy use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">Improving<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/06\/10\/cheapest-way-cut-climate-pollution-energy-efficiency\">energy efficiency<\/a>, employing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/11\/19\/carbon-markets-reward-10-pioneering-states-whos-next\">carbon markets<\/a>, enacting<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/06\/03\/power-plant-rule-tipping-point-clean-energy-economy\">power plant standards<\/a>, and accelerating clean energy deployment are all part of our five-year strategy to curb emissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">The European Union already has an emission reduction plan in place, the U.S. is taking action on carbon pollution from cars and power plants, and China recently reached a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/11\/13\/us-china-climate-pact-game-changer-clean-energy\">historic agreement<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>with the United States to limit emissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\"><strong>Two: By reducing short-lived climate pollutants we&#8217;ll come a long way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">If we cut emissions of short-lived pollutants such as<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/methane\">methane<\/a>, which only last in the atmosphere for at most a couple of decades, we can take a sizeable bite out of warming in the near-term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">Methane contributes to around a quarter of the warming we are experiencing today, so this is an enormous opportunity we cannot pass up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">We already have the technology in hand to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas industry in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/03\/practical-air-pollution-controls-even-oil-and-gas-industry-cant-deny\">cost-effective<\/a>\u00a0way.\u00a0Industry would spend just a penny more for each thousand cubic feet of gas it produces.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font: bold 15px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 30px 0px 20px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #444233;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">It\u2019s not too late<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">While turning the corner on global emissions by 2020 is feasible, it can only happen with many partners working together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">EDF expects to take actions\u00a0in alliance with many others that contribute to about half of the needed reductions in short-lived and long-lived emissions we&#8217;ve identified in our five-year strategy. We&#8217;re also\u00a0working to set the stage\u00a0for actions post-2020 that will drive down emissions even further.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 14px\/20px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;margin: 0px 0px 25px;padding: 0px;border: 0px currentColor;color: #000000;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;vertical-align: baseline;background-color: #ffffff\">While some of the climate change consequences may be irreversible\u00a0\u2013\u00a0as appears to be the case with West Antarctica\u00a0\u2013\u00a0we can still set ourselves on a much better path for the future by taking action now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(This post\u00a0originally appeared on\u00a0EDF Voices) &nbsp; As 2014 draws to a close, two recent developments show that global temperatures are rising at an alarming rate.
