Sales through October are running <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/petemplate.aspx?storyid=36662\">20% higher<\/a> than their 2013 levels. It\u2019s a banner year that continues to pick-up steam. 2015 is looking even stronger, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/petemplate.aspx?storyid=36664\">forecasts suggesting<\/a> it will be the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> strongest year ever for truck sales. There are several factors driving this market. Higher fuel efficiency is top among them.<\/p>\n<p>This point was brought home recently by the lead transportation analyst for investment firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stifel.com\/\">Stifel<\/a>, who noted that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcvelocity.com\/articles\/20141121-nitl-attendees-get-a-glimpse-of-chickens-coming-home-to-roost\/\">the superior fuel efficiency of the newer engines<\/a>\u201d was a key in getting fleets to buy new trucks now.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO of Daimler Trucks, the leading producer of class 8 trucks for the U.S. market, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fleetequipmentmag.com\/greenhouse-gas-standards\/\">acknowledged recently<\/a> that their most efficient engine and transmission combination was \u201calready sold out for 2014\u201d and that the \u201cdemand is beyond their expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just Daimler that is having a good year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cummins <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/10\/28\/cummins-results-idUSL1N0SM27M20141028\">posted higher-than-expected quarterly profits<\/a> recently \u201clifted by strong sales of its vehicle components in North America.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>PACCAR announced strong quarterly earnings that, according to CEO Ron Armstrong, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/paccar-announces-strong-quarterly-revenues-and-earnings-2014-10-28\">reflect the benefits of strong truck sales in the U.S<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Navistar also \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/petemplate.aspx?storyid=36662&amp;page=2\">had a good month in October<\/a>,\u201d according to its CEO Troy Clarke. He noted that the demand for new trucks is being driven by the fact that \u201c<strong>new trucks have lower operating costs<\/strong>\u201d \u2013which is of course due to increased fuel efficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2014 is a banner year for truck sales; and 2014 trucks are the most efficient ever.\u00a0 2014 trucks are the most efficient ever <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/news\/washington-gets-it-right-first-ever-national-fuel-standards-trucks-and-buses-edf\">because of smart, well-design federal policy<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the first year of the <a class=\"downloadLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/otaq\/climate\/documents\/420f11031.pdf\">2014-2018 heavy truck efficiency standards<\/a> that will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduce CO2 emissions by about 270million metric tons,<\/li>\n<li>save about 530 million barrels of oil over the life of vehicles built between 2014 \u2013 2018,<\/li>\n<li>provide $49 billion in net program benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 2014-2018 heavy truck fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas program demonstrates that climate policy benefits businesses, our economy, and human health, while also cutting harmful climate pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Martin Daum, president and CEO of Daimler Trucks North America <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/fuel\/daimler-s-bernhard-diesel-alternative-fuel\">noted<\/a>, these standards \u201care very good examples of regulations that work well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its first year of existence, the 2014-2018 fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas program is boosting sales for manufacturers, reducing operating costs for fleets, and cutting climate pollution for all of us.
