{"id":899,"date":"2009-06-25T10:22:22","date_gmt":"2009-06-25T17:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/truthsquad\/2009\/06\/25\/climate-bill-will-not-harm-working-class-families\/"},"modified":"2009-06-25T10:22:22","modified_gmt":"2009-06-25T17:22:22","slug":"climate-bill-will-not-harm-working-class-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2009\/06\/25\/climate-bill-will-not-harm-working-class-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Bill Will Not Harm Working-Class Families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a June 24 letter, the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) claims that the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) would harm poor and working-class families.<\/p>\n<p>CORE, which has reportedly received <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exxonsecrets.org\/html\/orgfactsheet.php?id=111\">funding from ExxonMobil<\/a>, cites no basis for its extreme assertions, and completely ignores the objective analyses of ACES showing that the bill would <strong>benefit<\/strong> low-income consumers and populations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Analysis of ACES by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/ftpdocs\/103xx\/doc10327\/06-19-CapAndTradeCosts.pdf\">Congressional Budget Office<\/a> shows that\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>households in the lowest income quintile would see an average net benefit of about $40<\/strong> in 2020&#8243; under ACES.<\/li>\n<li>As CBO explicitly notes, <strong>that figure &#8220;does not include the economic benefits and other benefits of the reduction in GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions<\/strong> and the associated slowing of climate change.&#8221; According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rprogress.org\/publications\/2004\/CBCF_REPORT_execsum.pdf#search=%22unequal\">Congressional Black Caucus Foundation<\/a>, \u201c<strong>the African American community will disproportionately benefit from climate policies that slow climate change<\/strong>,\u201d in part because \u201cAfrican Americans are already disproportionately burdened<em> <\/em>by the health effects of climate change, including deaths during heat waves and from worsened air pollution.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/index.cfm?fa=view&amp;id=2848\">Center for Budget and Policy Priorities<\/a>, one of the nation\u2019s premier policy organizations working on public policies that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals, just released a new report, \u201c<strong><em>New EPA and CBO Estimates Refute Claims That House Climate Bill Would Impose Large Costs on Households and the Economy.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The name says it all.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a June 24 letter, the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) claims that the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) would harm poor and working-class families.
