{"id":892,"date":"2009-05-20T07:02:36","date_gmt":"2009-05-20T14:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/truthsquad\/2009\/05\/20\/fact-check-from-climate-hearings-51909\/"},"modified":"2009-05-20T07:02:36","modified_gmt":"2009-05-20T14:02:36","slug":"fact-check-from-climate-hearings-51909","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2009\/05\/20\/fact-check-from-climate-hearings-51909\/","title":{"rendered":"Fact Check from Climate Hearings &#8211; 5\/19\/09"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Waxman-Markey bill will increase utility bills.<\/strong> \u2013 Mike Rogers (R-MI)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yes, it will.\u00a0 By roughly what it costs to brew one pot of coffee in the morning, and substantially less than a pack of chewing gum.\u00a0 EPA estimates this bill will cost the average American household as little as $98 per year \u2013 in other words, about a dime a day per person.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s nothing compared to what will happen to Planet Earth, and the economy, if we fail to reduce greenhouse gas emissions &#8212; punishing heat waves, droughts, water shortages, sea level rise that threatens coastal cities, food shortages around the world, intense hurricanes, and more.\u00a0 Even the military is worried about the national security implications.\u00a0 One never hears about these costs from the opponents of this bill \u2013 either because they don\u2019t even believe global warming is real, or they refuse to believe what scientists are saying about the future consequences of inaction.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This bill will increase unemployment. It\u2019s in the bill.<\/strong> \u2013 Mike Rogers (R-MI)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jobs are created and destroyed in a market economy on a daily basis.\u00a0 But new jobs &#8212; good jobs &#8212; will be created as U.S. companies ramp up production of clean energy technologies. The Energy Information Agency of the Department of Energy has predicted that total manufacturing employment will be roughly the same in the year 2030 under cap and trade versus business as usual.<\/p>\n<p>These new jobs will come in dynamic new industries &#8212; from manufacturing, installing, and servicing green energy technologies.\u00a0 EDF has created a map detailing where a carbon cap will create jobs in 14 states \u2013 go to www.lesscarbonmorejobs.org.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Green jobs are \u201csubprime\u201d and will disappear over time \u201cjust like leaves on a tree.\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 Phil Gingrey (R-GA, yesterday)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Depends on what you call \u201csubprime.\u201d\u00a0 Are jobs making steel for wind turbine towers \u201csubprime\u201d?\u00a0 Are jobs making solar cells \u201csubprime\u201d?\u00a0 Are jobs making energy-efficient windows?\u00a0 How about jobs making wind turbine blades?\u00a0 Or the 8,000 other component parts in a single wind turbine?\u00a0 And why should these jobs disappear?\u00a0 Like any machine, a wind turbine will wear out and need replacement.\u00a0 In the meantime, mechanics will need to service it.\u00a0 For decades, solar cells have been getting progressively more efficient.\u00a0 Twenty years from now (or even sooner), it will become economically advantageous to replace the solar cells we install today, because the new cells will be more efficient.<br \/>\nWhy are any of these jobs subprime?\u00a0 Why would they disappear tomorrow?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>China and India won\u2019t sign on.<\/strong> \u2013 Mike Rogers (R-MI)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The U.S. is the undisputed economic, political, and military leader of the West.\u00a0 Among Western nations, we are also the largest single emitter of greenhouse gas pollution.\u00a0 One guarantee: China and India will not cap their greenhouse gas emissions unless the U.S. moves first.\u00a0 But once the U.S. passes an emissions cap, then China and India can no longer use U.S. inaction as an excuse not to cap their carbon pollution. A cap and trade bill will unleash the entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in the U.S. waiting for Congress to act.\u00a0 The new, green technologies they create can be manufactured here, used to reduce our emissions, and exported to nations like China and India.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This legislation will run off jobs to other countries that emit more carbon.<\/strong> \u2013 Steve Scalise (R-LA)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you haven\u2019t slept through the past 30 years, you\u2019ve probably noticed that jobs have been \u201crunning off\u201d to other countries for a long time.\u00a0 Those larger trends will continue, as the U.S. continues its shift from a manufacturing to a service economy, for better or worse.
