You\u2019re not imagining things \u2013 we\u2019ve heard these many, many times before.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA recently held\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/08\/04\/broad-support-epa-wont-make-headlines-its-news-we-can-all-use\">public hearings<\/a>\u00a0around the country to solicit comments on its new proposal to put reasonable, nationwide limits on climate pollution from power plants.<\/p>\n<p>The plan is\u00a0moderate, flexible, and paves the way for considerable economic gains, but the substance hardly mattered for some die-hard opponents: The fossil fuel industry allies trotted out the same talking points about the supposed costs of action and American indifference to clean air policies that they always do.<\/p>\n<p>Tellingly, industry lobbyists and their friends in Congress couldn\u2019t even be bothered to wait and see what the rule said before\u00a0blasting it with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/fact-checker\/wp\/2014\/06\/03\/gop-lawmakers-rush-to-cite-study-to-discredit-new-epa-rule-but-study-assumed-epa-rule-would-be-tougher\/\">wildly inaccurate claims<\/a>\u00a0about the cost of implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Fossil fuel industry allies have clung to these false arguments for decades, so it\u2019s little wonder misinformation continues to swirl around these rules and the clean energy debate at large.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the real facts about five issues opponents raised about the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/act-now-key-opportunity-support-carbon-limits\">Clean Power Plan<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Renewable energy is taking hold.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Opponents of clean air regulations are keen to convince the public that affordable, renewable energy is a pipe dream. But the truth is renewable energy has never been more efficient, it\u2019s never been less expensive, and it\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/07\/clean-energy-technology-booming-five-reasons-it\">taking root\u00a0<\/a>all over the country.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at solar power: According to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/news\/details\/beitrag\/us-solar-power-costs-fall-60-in-just-18-months_100012797\/#axzz2qg0NDEBG\">U.S. Solar Energy Industries Association<\/a>, the cost of solar power plummeted 60 percent between the first quarter of 2011 and the second quarter of 2013. The long-term picture is just as impressive: In 2012, rooftop solar panels cost about 1 percent of what they did 35 years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>And solar isn\u2019t the only renewable that\u2019s catching on. Wind energy accounted for one-third of new power capacity over the last five years,\u00a0an amount that could\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2014\/05\/the-crazy-economics-of-the-wind-industry-in-two-charts\/361672\/\">double in the years to come<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Texas, the nation\u2019s top wind producing state, saw wind energy generation grow a whopping 13 percent in 2013. Last year, 60 percent of wind projects in the entire United States were in Texas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Americans support limits on greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Industry lobbyists often suggest that Americans cringe at any and all attempts to curb the pollution that causes global warming, but that argument is flat-out false. Recent polling shows that&#8217;s clearly not the case.<\/p>\n<p>A recent study by Yale found that\u00a064 percent of Americans<a href=\"http:\/\/environment.yale.edu\/climate-communication\/article\/americans-support-co2-limits-on-coal-fired-power-plants\">support strict carbon dioxide emission limits<\/a>\u00a0on existing power plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>The power plant rules will be efficient and affordable.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I wrote earlier, the fossil fuel industry and their allies in Congress were eager to say the proposed rules will cost vast sums of money that will trickle down to consumers and destroy jobs in the process.\u00a0The Washington Post Fact-Checker thoroughly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/fact-checker\/wp\/2014\/06\/03\/gop-lawmakers-rush-to-cite-study-to-discredit-new-epa-rule-but-study-assumed-epa-rule-would-be-tougher\/\">debunked those claims<\/a>, and it is not the first time industry has been caught red-handed.<\/p>\n<p>Time and again, the cost of implementing any rules related to the Clean Air Act are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/08\/it%E2%80%99s-official-1-invested-epa-yields-10-benefits\">five to 10 times less<\/a>\u00a0than the industry initially estimates they will be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Power companies already have tools to implement pollution limits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Clean Power Plan is part of President Obama\u2019s broader plan to reduce nationwide carbon dioxide emissions. He has set as a goal to reduce emissions by 17 percent by 2020 nationwide, using 2005 as the baseline.\u00a0Industry opponents claim the emission reduction goal is unrealistic, but there&#8217;s evidence to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>Xcel Energy, one of the country\u2019s largest electricity and natural gas providers, has already\u00a0reduced emissions\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/PR-CO-20140529-910840.html\">20 percent since 2005<\/a>. The company is on pace to decrease emissions by 31 percent in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>States can handle implementation better than you may think.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yet another common complaint from industry is these meaningful clean air regulations are too big and unwieldy for states to implement. Don\u2019t tell that to California, which last year implemented a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/06\/12\/california-climate-policies-offer-roadmap-epa-carbon-rule\">world-class climate law<\/a>\u00a0that has led to substantive greenhouse gas reductions and economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>And the nine states in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rggi.org\/\">Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative<\/a>are already reaching stellar results.<\/p>\n<p>Industry allies are actually half-right about one thing, though: The Clean Power Plan is indeed a huge deal.
