{"id":5753,"date":"2014-05-07T11:22:04","date_gmt":"2014-05-07T16:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=5753"},"modified":"2014-05-07T11:23:07","modified_gmt":"2014-05-07T16:23:07","slug":"new-report-how-climate-change-is-impacting-where-you-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2014\/05\/07\/new-report-how-climate-change-is-impacting-where-you-live\/","title":{"rendered":"New report: How climate change is impacting where you live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/globefromspace_shutterstock_62506651_rf_0.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"348\" \/>The National Climate Assessment (NCA) report, prepared by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, is essentially the U.S. equivalent of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/31\/ipcc-cutting-pollution-isnt-enough-we-need-smart-adaptation-too\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/a>: Using the best available science, over 300 experts synthesized current understanding of observed and future climate changes and impacts, particularly in the U.S. The third ever NCA was released today, and concludes beyond a reasonable scientific doubt that Americans are being affected by climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Among the findings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>U.S. average temperatures have increased by 1.3 to 1.9\u00baF since record-keeping began in 1895, and most of this warming has occurred since 1970<\/li>\n<li>Heavy precipitation has increased in many parts of the country<\/li>\n<li>Extremes such as heat waves, droughts, floods, and North Atlantic hurricanes are more frequent and\/or intense<\/li>\n<li>Summer sea ice in the Arctic has halved since record-keeping began in 1979<\/li>\n<li>Sea level rise has increased coastal erosion and storm surge damage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These changing conditions produce a variety of tangible stresses on society by affecting human health, water resources, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and natural ecosystems. The particular impacts vary by region, but no corner of the country is immune to the change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what\u2019s happening where you live?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/static5.businessinsider.com\/image\/5368db016da811b20c673a7a-596-748\/screen%20shot%202014-05-06%20at%208.49.11%20am.png\" width=\"596\" height=\"748\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: National Climate Assessment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unless we take immediate action to curb our emissions of heat-trapping gases, the foreseeable future will be plagued by further warming and worsening impacts. The good news is that because we know what the cause is, we also know what is needed in order to stabilize our planet.
