{"id":4554,"date":"2014-02-10T14:50:50","date_gmt":"2014-02-10T19:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=4554"},"modified":"2014-02-10T14:50:50","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T19:50:50","slug":"powerful-testimonies-at-epa-hearing-on-carbon-pollution-standards-for-power-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2014\/02\/10\/powerful-testimonies-at-epa-hearing-on-carbon-pollution-standards-for-power-plants\/","title":{"rendered":"Powerful Testimonies at EPA Hearing on Carbon Pollution Standards for Power Plants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you were busy watching the Winter Olympics, you may have missed another important\u2013if slightly smaller\u2013event that happened last Thursday:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a hearing in Washington, D.C. on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.epa.gov\/carbon-pollution-standards\/2013-proposed-carbon-pollution-standard-new-power-plants0\">proposed carbon\u00a0pollution\u00a0standards for new power plants<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>U.S. power plants are one of the largest sources of carbon pollution in the world. Carbon pollution is the main reason for climate change.<\/p>\n<p>EPA\u2019s proposed standards will set the <b>first-ever national limits<\/b> on carbon pollution from new fossil fuel power plants.<\/p>\n<p>I had the\u00a0privilege of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/testimony-ghgemissionsnewstationarysources-mandywarner-feb6-2014.pdf\">testifying on behalf of EDF<\/a> and its 750,000 members.<\/p>\n<p>It was uplifting to hear testimony from so many diverse groups in support of these historic proposed standards.<\/p>\n<p>Among those testifying were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island<\/li>\n<li>Moms Clean Air Force, on behalf of hundreds of thousands of moms across America<\/li>\n<li>Public health groups<\/li>\n<li>Environmental justice groups<\/li>\n<li>Veterans and national security groups<\/li>\n<li>Groups representing clean energy companies<\/li>\n<li>Latino groups<\/li>\n<li>Faith groups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and many more \u2026<\/p>\n<p>But climate change is an issue that threatens communities and families across America.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it was especially touching to hear the personal stories of how climate change impacts people, including one woman from Virginia who testified about raising a daughter with asthma, about the financial impacts of the disease&#8211;and about how the costs of pollution are not borne by the emitters, but by the public\u2013and by families like hers.<\/p>\n<p>Carbon pollution is a problem that we can fix.<\/p>\n<p>Consider these facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean energy continues to grow, and it is clear that America can generate affordable, clean electricity.<\/li>\n<li>Wind generation increased by <b>more than 40 percent<\/b> in the United States between 2011 and October of 2013.<\/li>\n<li>In April of 2013, the United States had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/monthly\/\">record month for wind power<\/a> with generation of <b>more than 17,000 gigawatt hours<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>In 2012, rooftop solar panels cost approximately <b>one percent<\/b> of what they did 35 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2008, as the cost of a solar module dropped from $3.80 per watt to 80 cents per watt, <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2013\/09\/f2\/Revolution%20Now%20--%20The%20Future%20Arrives%20for%20Four%20Clean%20Energy%20Technologies.pdf\">solar deployment has jumped by about 10 times<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thesolarfoundation.org\/learn-more\/solar-news?doc=201401271100PR_NEWS_USPR_____MN52140&amp;showRelease=1&amp;dir=0&amp;categories=SOLAR-POWER&amp;andorquestion=OR&amp;&amp;passDir=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,15,17,34\">U.S. solar jobs grew 20 percent last year<\/a>. The industry now supports <b>more than 140,000 jobs<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Renewable energy is expected to account for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/forecasts\/aeo\/er\/early_elecgen.cfm?src=Renewable-b1\">28 percent of the growth<\/a> in electricity generation from 2012 to 2040.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the hearing, some opponents of EPA\u2019s common-sense standards testified, representing groups like the American Petroleum Institute and the American Coal Council.<\/p>\n<p>They repeated claims we have heard time and again about clean air standards costing too much or technology not being available.<\/p>\n<p>We have heard similar claims in the past\u2014<b>claims that were subsequently disproved<\/b>\u2014about scrubbers and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2010\/12\/14\/there-they-go-again-part-two-mercury-controls-on-power-plants\/\">mercury controls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>EPA has found that carbon pollution controls, like carbon capture and storage, are adequately demonstrated for new coal-fired power plants\u2014and that finding is based on an extensive body of technical information.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear from the <b>more than four million people<\/b> who have weighed in with EPA in support of these standards that many Americans are ready for a clean energy future, and believe it is imperative that we address the largest source of carbon pollution in our country.<\/p>\n<p>You can help the fight to limit the carbon pollution from power plants by urging EPA to adopt strong standards.
