Health groups, power companies, environmental justice groups, Latino groups, businesses, labor, moms, environmental groups, investors, and the NAACP have expressed support for EPA\u2019s carbon pollution standards for new power plants.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a round-up of just a few statements made on last week\u2019s historic announcement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Addressing carbon pollution will help protect public health. Higher temperatures can enhance the conditions for ozone (smog) formation. Even with the steps that are in place to reduce smog, evidence warns that changes in climate are likely to increase the risk of unhealthy smog levels in the future in large parts of the United States. More smog means more childhood asthma attacks and complications for others with lung disease.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lung.org\/press-room\/press-releases\/power-plant-carbon-pollution-standard-proposal-applauded.html\"><em>American Lung Association<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>These updated\u00a0standards\u00a0to limit carbon pollution from new power plants\u00a0will\u00a0help\u00a0fight climate change; spur our economy to innovate\u00a0and\u00a0move to cleaner, renewable sources of energy; and help the American economy become more energy efficient in the years to come.\u00a0The rules are an important part of President Obama\u2019s comprehensive plan for\u00a0responding to the threat of climate change\u00a0that\u00a0will create and maintain jobs all across the economy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluegreenalliance.org\/news\/latest\/bluegreen-alliance-statement-carbon-pollution-standards-will-spur-innovation-create-jobs-protect-environment\"><em>BlueGreen Alliance<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026Calpine supports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s (EPA\u2019s) efforts to regulate GHG emissions as mandated under the Clean Air Act. The newly proposed GHG New Source Performance Standard for new electric generating plants is an important first step in the EPA\u2019s plans to address climate change.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/phx.corporate-ir.net\/phoenix.zhtml?c=103361&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1856658&amp;highlight=\"><em>Calpine<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Climate change could add as much as 10% to portfolio-wide risk in the next two decades, putting trillions of dollars of institutional investors\u2019 assets at risk\u2026These new standards will reinforce what forward-looking investors already know: that climate change poses real financial risks and opportunities and that the future of the electric power sector depends on investing in cleaner technologies and more efficient resources \u2013 investments that create jobs and economic benefits.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceres.org\/files\/bicep-files\/investor-carbon-pollution-standard-support-letter\/at_download\/file\"><em>Letter from 48 investors<\/em><\/a><em>, representing over $900 billion in asset management<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>This is another major step forward to protect future generations from deadly pollution\u2026 Forty percent of all energy-related emissions of greenhouse gases in 2012 came from power plants, and most of that came from coal-burning power plants. This pollution has the most harmful effect on low-income communities and communities of color.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naacp.org\/press\/entry\/naacp-commends-epa-advancement-on-setting-limits-on-coal-plant-pollution\"><em>National Association for the Advancement of Colored People<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Generations of Latino ranchers, farmers and farmworkers have played a fundamental role in our agricultural economy\u2026 As farmers and ranchers, we have experienced the ravages of climate change first-hand. Droughts and floods have devastated our crops and land, threatening our livelihoods and our ability to continue to provide healthy fruits and vegetables to households across the U.S\u2026 The EPA\u2019s announcement today is a first step in combatting the real consequences of climate change that are impacting our communities and we are ready to be a part of the solution.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/vocesverdes.org\/latinos-support-first-critical-step-in-presidents-climate-action-plan\/\"><em>National Latino Farmers and Ranchers Trade Association<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>While we would have preferred that Congress enact legislation limiting greenhouse gas emissions, today&#8217;s action by EPA takes an important first step in establishing standards for new electric power plants that will provide certainty for the industry and the framework for Agency action on existing plants.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pseg.com\/info\/media\/newsreleases\/2013\/2013-09-20.jsp#.UkBBDYYqh8E\"><em>PSEG<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>The new standards will reinforce what forward-looking companies already know: that climate change poses real financial risks and opportunities and that the future of the electric power sector depends on investing in cleaner technologies and more efficient resources \u2013 investments that create jobs and economic benefits.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceres.org\/press\/press-releases\/major-u.s.-companies-and-investors-support-carbon-pollution-standards-for-new-power-plants\"><em>Multi-business group letter<\/em><\/a><em>, signed by 22 companies including<\/em><em> Unilever, Levi Strauss &amp; Co. and The North Face<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The far-reaching effects of climate change will be felt throughout our society, in our economy and day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/04\/climate-change-imperils-human-health\">health impacts of climate change<\/a> are apparent as temperatures rise.
