Seems the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/ap\/financialnews\/D8V72P780.htm\">federal government is considering the risks<\/a>, too.\u00a0 <i>BusinessWeek<\/i> reports that the federal government is &quot;suspending a major loan program for coal-fired power plants in rural communities, saying the uncertainties of climate change and rising construction costs make the loans too risky.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><b>Act Now or Pay More Later.<\/b> The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has issued a new report on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/document\/3\/0,3343,en_2649_37465_40190275_1_1_1_37465,00.html\">how much it will cost to fix the environment<\/a> &#8211; including (but not limited to) such problems as global warming. According to the Associated Press, the report says, &quot;We need forward-looking policies today to avoid high costs of inaction or delayed action over the longer term.&quot; This agrees with other recent studies on the subject (see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cier.umd.edu\/climateadaptation\/index.html\">University of Maryland<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gdae.org\/FloridaClimate.html\">Tufts University<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/clientservice\/ccsi\/greenhousegas.asp\">McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is by Sheryl Canter, an Online Writer and Editorial Manager at the Environmental Defense Fund.
