{"id":3773,"date":"2013-01-15T17:35:30","date_gmt":"2013-01-15T22:35:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=3773"},"modified":"2013-01-15T17:35:30","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T22:35:30","slug":"automakers-defend-historic-clean-cars-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2013\/01\/15\/automakers-defend-historic-clean-cars-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Automakers Defend Historic Clean Cars Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The world\u2019s biggest automakers are standing up in court to defend America\u2019s historic new fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards.<\/p>\n<p>The Obama Administration announced the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/news\/edf-celebrates-announcement-new-fuel-efficiency-and-emissions-standards-cars-0\">clean cars standards<\/a> last August.<\/p>\n<p>The new standards will <strong>double<\/strong> fleet-wide fuel economy by 2025, to <strong>54.5 miles per gallon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Save families more than $8,000 at the gas pump over the lives of their new cars or trucks<\/li>\n<li>Dramatically reduce our nation\u2019s dependence on<em> <\/em>oil<\/li>\n<li>Cut greenhouse gases by six billion tons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By 2025, the standards are projected to <strong>reduce U.S. oil consumption<\/strong> by more than <strong>two million barrels per day<\/strong>.\u00a0 Combined with earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/news\/washington-gets-it-right-first-ever-national-fuel-standards-trucks-and-buses-edf\">standards for large diesel trucks<\/a>, the daily oil savings in 2025 will be substantially <strong>more than the amount<\/strong> <strong>of oil imported each day from Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia<\/strong> in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>six billion tons of greenhouse gas reductions<\/strong> are <strong>more than the total of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions in 2010<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(You can read more about the standards, and their benefits on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/transportation\/fuel-economy-standards\">our website<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>These historic standards are supported by consumers, the United Auto Workers, national security experts, U.S. automakers, many U.S. states, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and environmental organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there are some groups that don\u2019t support them.<\/p>\n<p>Industry groups &#8212; including the Utility Air Regulatory Group, American Petroleum Institute, National Association of Manufacturers, and National Oilseed Processors Association &#8212; have filed legal challenges in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>EDF will defend these historic standards in court. We and our allies have already moved to intervene in support of them.<\/p>\n<p>Now, <strong>both U.S. and foreign automakers<\/strong> have also stepped in to defend the landmark standards.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers filed a motion to intervene in support of the standards.<\/p>\n<p>Their motion says that the court challenges:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>jeopardize the further development and continuation of an integrated national approach to increasing automobile fuel economy and thus reducing carbon emissions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just three days earlier, the Association of Global Automakers also filed a motion to intervene in support of the standards.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the two automaker groups include Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great reminder that when we work together, America can achieve lasting gains for our environment and our economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world\u2019s biggest automakers are standing up in court to defend America\u2019s historic new fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards.
