{"id":3194,"date":"2012-01-25T14:45:53","date_gmt":"2012-01-25T19:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=3194"},"modified":"2012-01-25T14:45:53","modified_gmt":"2012-01-25T19:45:53","slug":"state-of-the-union-address-a-nation-built-to-last-on-clean-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2012\/01\/25\/state-of-the-union-address-a-nation-built-to-last-on-clean-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"State of the Union Address: A Nation &#8220;Built to Last&#8221; on Clean Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama delivered his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2012\/01\/24\/remarks-president-state-union-address\">State of the Union Address<\/a> last night, and energy issues played a starring role in the speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Here are some of the comments that caught my attention:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0The President drew some firm lines in the sand.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The address was a strong defense of the importance of\u00a0clean energy<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to America\u2019s long-term economic prosperity.\u00a0The President said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u201cI will not walk away from the promise of clean energy.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the speech, the President called for Congress to pass a clean energy standard and extend clean energy tax credits, while ending a century of tax subsidies for oil companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The President again rejected the false choice between a clean environment and jobs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t have to choose between the environment and our economy.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His description of the remarkable comeback of American vehicle manufacturers, which are rapidly innovating to meet aggressive fuel economy standards, proved his point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A mixed bag on natural gas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On natural gas, the President committed to full disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing on federal lands.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0But &#8212; he missed an opportunity to lay out the bargain that must be struck.<\/p>\n<p>We can help revolutionize America\u2019s energy picture with our newly abundant supplies of gas, but to do so responsibly, we <strong>must<\/strong>\u00a0get the environmental rules right to protect our air, land and water wherever &#8220;fracking&#8221; wells are drilled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Getting the environmental rules right means disclosure of the chemicals used in drilling. It <strong>also<\/strong> means reasonable standards to ensure high-integrity well design, safe water and chemical management, and methane gas containment to prevent additional harm to our climate.<\/p>\n<p>With those kinds of safeguards in place, gas can reduce our environmental problems instead of increasing them.<\/p>\n<p>The blueprint for action already exists in the recommendations of the Secretary of Energy&#8217;s Advisory Board. They must be swiftly implemented.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Standing by new mercury standards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President ended 2011\u00a0with\u00a0historic action\u00a0to reduce mercury\u00a0in our air, water, and food.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As you probably remember, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/air\/mercury-standards\">EDF was a strong advocate<\/a> for those groundbreaking new standards.<\/p>\n<p>Last night, the President stood by his action, declaring:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I will not back down from protecting our kids from mercury poisoning, or making sure that our food is safe and our water is clean.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2012\/01\/24\/remarks-president-state-union-address\">Last night\u2019s speech<\/a> wasn\u2019t the only time President Obama has talked about a clean energy future recently.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, he spoke to EPA staff and told them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t have to\u00a0choose between dirty air and dirty water or a growing economy. We can make sure that we are doing right by our environment,\u00a0and, in fact, putting people back to work all across America<em>.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He&#8217;s right about that, but make no mistake &#8212;\u00a0in the weeks and months ahead, there will still be efforts in Washington\u00a0to block efforts to change the environmentally-destructive and irresponsible course\u00a0on which the nation, and the world, are bound.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We at EDF\u00a0will continue working to remind our lawmakers, and all Americans, that the science of climate change is clear and so are the economics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that we <strong>can<\/strong> build a more sustainable future using\u00a0market-based approaches that\u00a0preserve\u00a0public health and the environment while creating new businesses and new jobs for American workers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama delivered his State of the Union Address last night, and energy issues played a starring role in the speech. \u00a0Here are some of the comments that caught my attention: \u00a0The President drew some firm lines in the sand.
