Great news, today, for anyone who wants cleaner air.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) just announced a settlement agreement<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0establish national emission standards\u00a0that will address the greenhouse gas pollution from new and existing fossil fuel power plants.<\/p>\n

The agreement\u00a0follows litigation launched in 2006 by a wide\u00a0variety of parties — including EDF — after EPA refused to address greenhouse gas pollution\u00a0in establishing national emission standards for power plants.\u00a0EPA’s 2006 action was based on\u00a0an interpretation of the Clean Air Act rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S. power plants are one of the single largest sources of airborne contaminants. They discharge more than 30 percent of all global warming pollution in America, about 40 percent of our toxic mercury, and almost two-thirds of our sulfur dioxide (which transforms into deadly fine particulate pollution and contributes to acid rain).<\/p>\n

Now, EPA will establish new standards that will include the greenhouse gas emissions from the plant. EPA will issue a draft of the standards by July\u00a026, 2011, and then\u00a0take final\u00a0action by May\u00a026, 2012.<\/p>\n

The announcement was immediately cheered by people across the country —\u00a0including EDF’s own Fred Krupp<\/a>, who said in a statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n

EPA’s commitment to address the dangerous, climate-disrupting pollution from power plants through common sense national standards will provide important environmental protections and will create economic certainty for vibrant new investments.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Along with EDF, the other parties to today’s settlement agreement\u00a0are:\u00a0the states of New York, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington; the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; the District of Columbia; the City of New York; Natural Resources Defense Council; and Sierra Club.<\/p>\n

And in more good news, EPA also announced\u00a0a settlement agreement\u00a0to address pollution limits\u00a0for refineries today. That proposal is due\u00a0by next December, and final action\u00a0is due in\u00a02012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
