International climate diplomacy continues next week in Bonn, Germany, where negotiators and advocates will set the stage for the United Nations\u2019 climate conference COP31 later this year in Antalya, T\u00fcrkiye. London Climate Action Week – taking place later in June – will then gather the largest mobilization of UK and EU-based companies, finance institutions, and civil society groups focused on climate action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These climate\u00a0meetings arrive at a moment of profound complexity\u00a0in our world:\u00a0Conflict\u00a0in\u00a0the Persian Gulf\u00a0is fueling\u00a0rising energy prices and\u00a0cost\u2011of\u2011living\u00a0pressures\u00a0on our households; fertilizer shortages are straining food security; and communities everywhere are bracing for an intense\u00a0wildfire season and\u00a0flooding\u00a0due to one of the most intense El\u00a0Ni\u00f1o seasons.\u00a0Responding\u00a0to these pressures, countries and companies are\u00a0forced to make\u00a0challenging\u00a0economic and energy\u00a0decisions\u00a0in real time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it is precisely\u00a0in moments like this\u00a0where windows of opportunity open to\u00a0make\u00a0clean\u00a0energy and\u00a0resilient development the easy choice for countries seeking energy security and\u00a0economic\u00a0prosperity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Transforming these fierce headwinds into momentum requires collaboration and whole-of-society-engagement to unlock and mobilize around emerging opportunities; climate diplomacy that delivers clarity and direction toward real-economy solutions; inclusive processes to drive finance for climate action; and putting people at the heart of climate solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An <\/strong>all-hands<\/em><\/strong> approach to seize opportunity in times of crisis<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Energy security remains top of mind for governments worldwide. The challenge now is to implement solutions that meet people\u2019s immediate needs\u2014energy affordability, reliability and access\u2014while maintaining momentum toward deep cuts in climate pollution and building resilience that reduces our climate risk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The recent\u00a0dialogues\u00a0on transitioning away from fossil fuels\u00a0in\u00a0Santa Marta, Colombia\u00a0underscored both the risk of backtracking toward\u00a0fossil\u2011based\u00a0systems and the enormous opportunity that clean energy offers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0achieve a just energy\u00a0transition\u00a0by\u00a0choosing between security and sustainability; we need actions\u00a0that deliver\u00a0both.\u00a0And in times of crisis, we need to work together to find\u00a0rare opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Right now, the world\u00a0is\u00a0reeling from a shortage of oil and gas supply. Meanwhile,\u00a0enough natural gas to power Japan, South Korea and Australia for a year\u00a0is\u00a0being\u00a0wasted through leaks and flaring at oil and gas infrastructure around the\u00a0world, and\u00a0instead leaked into the atmosphere as climate pollution.\u00a0We can turn this wasted energy into\u00a0energy that powers people\u2019s lives\u2014and\u00a0avoids near-term climate harm\u2014by tightening the screws and batting down the hatches,\u00a0equipment\u00a0maintenance\u00a0and worker training.\u00a0We can\u00a0eliminate\u00a070% of\u00a0fossil-fuel\u00a0methane emissions with\u00a0affordable fixes and\u00a0technologies\u00a0that we have today.\u00a0And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not only an energy security win today, but a leg up toward\u00a0enabling a more orderly and\u00a0equitable\u00a0longer-term energy transition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n The world\u2019s energy crisis is an opportunity to catalyze energy security and climate solutions\u2014but it requires all hands on deck to seize the opportunity, and spaces like the Bonn climate meetings and LCAW provide the convening power required for enhanced progress and action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Pulling the economic levers to make the climate choice the easy choice<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n London Climate Action Week will spark a gathering of stakeholders and leaders from the United Kingdom and across the European Union, including many from the private sector and finance who can play a major role in shaping the standards, financial tools and partnerships that enable climate action with lasting impact. This crowd gives us an opportunity to focus on one central question: How can we mobilize the money to drive a global climate transition?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n EDF will engage across sectors to help unlock the real\u2011economy pathways needed to: <\/p>\n\n\n\n Putting people at the center of solution design and implementation<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m a firm believer that a climate solution that only works for our atmosphere and fails to work for people is no solution at all. Conversely, solutions that center peoples\u2019 experiences and livelihoods at the heart of their design are the ones most likely to succeed and deliver benefits for the long haul. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Climate diplomacy and climate solutions must be grounded in and informed by the lived realities of households, farmers, workers and communities. You can\u2019t protect trees without the leadership of the community living near forest. We need to work directly with farmers to grow and produce food that feeds the world with less pollution. In the same way, we cannot transform our energy systems without the involvement of those directly involved in producing and using the energy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This is how a climate solution can be truly sustainable: by putting people first. In this moment of geopolitical tension and economic crisis, that principle is more important to our work than ever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking Ahead<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n As the world moves from Bonn to Antalya, the stakes could not be higher. The decisions that countries and companies make in the midst of this moment of conflict and upheaval will shape not only the trajectory of global climate action but also the economic and energy security landscape for decades to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n EDF will continue working with partners across governments, business and civil society to ensure that climate solutions are practical, investable and centered on people\u2019s wellbeing.
