At COP30<\/a>, countries agreed\u00a0within 10 years\u00a0to triple\u00a0support provided to\u00a0developing nations\u00a0for their adaptation priorities\u00a0to<\/span>\u202f<\/span>increase resilience<\/span>\u202f<\/span>to<\/span>\u202f<\/span>climate<\/span>\u202f<\/span>change. This commitment comes at a critical moment. As progress to reduce planet-warming pollution from burning fossil fuels\u00a0lags behind\u00a0what scientists say is necessary, money is urgently needed to adapt to a warming world. And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0worth the investment: every dollar spent on resilience yields ten times the return in avoided losses and economic benefits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We need more decision-makers to understand this return on investment\u2014and to do that, we need to build a\u00a0market for\u00a0adaptation solutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Climate impacts are accelerating faster than systems and societies can handle.\u00a0This year alone, we\u00a0witnessed\u00a014 winter wildfires in Southern California and floods displacing millions from Texas to Nepal. At the same time, slow-onset impacts\u2014like extreme heat, rising seas, and desertification\u2014are reshaping cities,\u00a0driving up\u00a0food and energy costs, and threatening jobs and livelihoods.\u00a0The\u00a0adaptation\u00a0gap\u00a0and the affordability crisis are\u00a0closely linked.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reality is clear: climate change is already costing us. What we need now is a shift in mindset. Investing in adaptation today\u2014proactively\u2014will make our economies and communities safer and more prosperous well into the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Market roadblocks to adaptation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

One reason adaptation\u00a0lags behind\u00a0is\u00a0market failure. Traditionally, adaptation has relied\u00a0almost entirely\u00a0on public funding. While essential, public dollars alone\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0get us where we need to go. We must mobilize private capital and create market conditions that\u00a0reward resilience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, right now, markets\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0adequately price climate risks or value climate resilience. Risks\u00a0remain\u00a0invisible,\u00a0resilience\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0rewarded, and proven adaptation technologies and services\u00a0fail to\u00a0reach the people who need them most.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking a page from the clean energy playbook<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The market challenges we\u00a0face on\u00a0adaptation are not new. In fact, we faced similar barriers when building clean energy markets.\u00a0But today, renewable energy is often cheaper than fossil fuels because we created incentives, set standards, aggregated demand, and raised awareness. We can apply\u00a0pages from this\u00a0market-building\u00a0playbook to\u00a0drive access to and\u00a0affordability\u00a0of\u00a0adaptation\u00a0solutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Think about what drove clean energy adoption: electric vehicle mandates, Energy Star certification, LEED building standards, and tax incentives for solar. These tools spurred investment, scaled demand, and brought down costs. Adaptation needs its own version of these market drivers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To make resilience visible, valuable, and investable\u2014and do it at scale\u2014will require\u00a0shifting\u00a0adaptation from\u00a0primarily\u00a0an\u00a0emergency response to\u00a0a\u00a0more proactive,\u00a0long-term economic strategy.\u00a0Here\u2019s\u00a0what that looks like:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
