Instead, it wrapped up as a complex package\u2014balancing\u00a0new\u00a0initiatives for\u00a0implementation\u00a0with the COP decision\u00a0itself, and\u00a0reflecting the\u00a0mutir\u00e3o\u00a0spirit of compromise across diverse voices.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We came into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/cop30\">COP30<\/a> knowing we are still falling short of our climate goals. Yet over these two weeks, we also saw real movement: beyond the formal outcome text, countries, communities, businesses, and civil society began pulling in the same direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The pavilions and dialogues revealed an axis of action\u2014solutions we can deploy now and\u00a0build on\u00a0tomorrow. Global ambition still falls short, but the inspiration here was clear: the future depends on how quickly we turn ideas into implementation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ultimately, COP30\u00a0must be assessed in its entirety, not just through the lens of negotiations.\u00a0For EDF, we measure success at COP30 through partnerships ignited, finance\u00a0mobilized, and voices engaged.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From tropical forests to the food sector, air quality to adaptation, here are the bright spots\u00a0that EDF is\u00a0building on after Bel\u00e9m:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Financing for\u00a0forests<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the Amazon, the link between forests, people and climate is immediate. That made progress on forest finance one of the most important signals from COP30.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The COP30 Presidency\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/statement-brazils-launch-tropical-forests-forever-facility\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">formally launched<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) with\u00a0an initial\u00a0multibillion-dollar pledge from\u00a0over\u00a050\u00a0countries,\u00a0including\u00a0Brazil, Indonesia, Norway, Germany, and\u00a0France. The goal is to provide long-term,\u00a0reliable\u00a0finance for countries that keep their tropical forests standing, with a dedicated share\u00a0(20 percent)\u00a0of funding for Indigenous Peoples and local communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EDF also helped launch the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forestclimateleaders.org\/news-and-resources\/countries-companies-and-civil-society-unite-to-launch-the-scaling-j-redd-coalition-at-cop30-3\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">J-REDD+ Coalition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0a new effort to\u00a0help\u00a0countries to bring\u00a0high-integrity\u00a0jurisdictional forest credits to market, and to ensure that the benefits reach the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/new-analysis-finds-indigenous-lands-and-protected-areas-are-key-slowing-deforestation-without\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">people who are keeping forests standing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 from the Amazon to other critical forest regions around the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finally, the COP30 Presidency announced that it plans to draft a roadmap to\u00a0halt and reverse\u00a0deforestation, to be presented this time next year.\u00a0While this roadmap was not\u00a0included in the formal COP decision, it nonetheless\u00a0will have the potential to set out a pathway for timely and urgent actions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wildfire\u00a0resilience<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bel\u00e9m also elevated one of the fastest-growing climate risks in forest regions: wildfire.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EDF and partners launched the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/environmental-defense-fund-and-partners-launch-wildfire-action-accelerator-pledge-more\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wildfire Action Accelerator Pledge<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, bringing together partners from 18 countries and regions \u2013 such as Ecuador, Peru, Ghana, and Kenya \u2013 and more than 30 Indigenous and local community organizations. Its aim is to move from reacting to wildfires to preventing them, through community-centered approaches, stronger climate ambition and innovative finance for integrated fire management.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brazil\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Call to Action on Integrated Fire Management and Wildfire\u00a0Resilience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0endorsed by\u00a050\u00a0countries, reinforced that shift. Taken together, these efforts begin to build the global cooperation needed to keep forests\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and the\u00a0communities\u00a0who depend on them\u00a0\u2013\u00a0safer in a hotter, drier world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Adaptation<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another clear signal from COP30 was the growing centrality of adaptation. Within the final COP30 negotiated outcome, Parties\u202fagreed to triple\u202fthe support for developing countries to\u202fincrease their resilience\u202fagainst\u202fclimate\u202fchange by 2035.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But we need to scale adaptation solutions faster, as the impacts of climate change are hitting communities and affecting economies today. Throughout the two weeks, EDF convened and joined events that framed adaptation not only as a moral imperative, but as an\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">economic<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0one \u2013 a way to reduce risk for municipalities, businesses and households while safeguarding lives and livelihoods. That framing ran through discussions,\u00a0highlighting the need to move the market on adaptation\u00a0and make resilience the common-sense economic choice.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Health and air quality<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Short-lived climate pollutants, such as\u00a0methane and black carbon,\u00a0have outsized impacts on both warming and\u00a0human\u00a0health.\u00a0New\u00a0efforts including the\u00a0Super Pollutant Country Action Accelerator\u00a0and\u00a0coordinated national plans to target black carbon\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0promising steps to\u00a0reduce\u00a0these pollutants,\u00a0while also\u00a0generating\u00a0critical\u00a0co-benefits\u00a0like\u00a0cleaner air and\u00a0economic savings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Renewed efforts to slash super-pollutants are critical to meet the Global Methane Pledge goal of a 30 percent methane<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reduction\u00a0by 2030.\u00a0Achieving this\u00a0target\u00a0could prevent\u00a0180,000 premature deaths\u00a0annually.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EDF was proud to root our work on healthy air at COP30 in the Amazonian communities that hosted us. EDF\u2019s new report, \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/breathing-life-amazonian-cities-transformative-investment-case-clean-air-health-equity-and-economic\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Breathing Life into Amazonian Cities<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 set out practical steps to cut air pollution in Brazil\u2019s Amazon region and\u00a0detailed\u00a0the health and economic benefits of doing so. Partners used the report in Bel\u00e9m to show how cleaner air, public health and climate action reinforce one another.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/environmental-defense_cop30-activity-7394842517470486528-QlFP?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAiL06MBlCMVgvCqBPL9d9CbugvlRpsxy7w\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bel\u00e9m Health Action\u00a0Plan<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0backed by more than 80 countries, and the announcement of a Climate and Health Funders Coalition pledging hundreds of millions of dollars to climate-health initiatives, underlined the point: protecting people\u2019s health is a powerful driver\u00a0to cut pollution.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Global coordination on carbon\u00a0markets\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COP30 delivered\u00a0an important step\u00a0toward making climate policy more effective\u00a0for fast action. \u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/open-coalition-compliance-carbon-markets-adopted-belem-climate-summit-catalyze-cost-effective\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Open Coalition on Compliance Carbon Markets<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0launched\u00a0with\u00a0an initial\u00a0group of 18 countries. The coalition is designed as a platform for governments to learn from one another and build carbon markets that are more connected, more\u00a0transparent\u00a0and better aligned with real-world emissions cuts. Done well,\u00a0the Coalition can pave the way for\u00a0these compliance markets\u00a0to\u00a0align and collaborate\u00a0unlocking\u00a0innovation and investment to cut climate pollution around the world, while promoting cleaner and affordable development.\u00a0\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sustainable agriculture\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Agriculture is a leading driver of climate pollution \u2013 it accounts for 40\u00a0percent\u00a0of annual global methane emissions from human-related activities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In Bel\u00e9m, EDF and partners put forward a plan to scale up finance and increase practical solutions for methane mitigation in resilient agri-food systems. EDF also released a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/94-agricultural-finance-institutions-see-climate-change-material-risk-business\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">survey of insights<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from over 150 agricultural finance institutions, finding that most view climate risk as a financial risk that needs to be managed, and offer sustainability-related products and services to farmers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From COP30 to 2030<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COP30 in Bel\u00e9m\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0the breakthrough many hoped for, but it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a failure either. It revealed gaps in emissions, finance, and justice, even as communities worldwide already face the consequences of delayed action.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One key takeaway:\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mutir\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014a Tupi-Guarani word for \u201ccommunity work\u201d\u2014must\u00a0continue\u00a0to guide us\u00a0beyond COP30.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With\u00a0that operating principle, and a coordinated Action Agenda in place, we can turn momentum into real-world impact.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hosting COP30 on the edge of the Amazon reminded\u00a0us\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0at stake\u2014and what we can still protect.
