Since Bel\u00e9m was announced as host at COP28 in Dubai in 2023, Indigenous Peoples and local and Afro-descendant communities have been mobilizing across continents. After nearly two years \u2013 through local, national, and international gatherings \u2013 they arrive as leaders ready to shape climate action, including forest and biodiversity conservation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The world\u2019s largest tropical forests play a key role in stabilizing our global climate. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indigenous peoples and local communities manage or have tenure rights over a significant portion of these forests, including over\u202fhalf of all remaining intact tropical forests. Their stewardship is crucial for global biodiversity conservation and climate, often outperforming government-managed protected areas in preventing deforestation.\u202fIn the Amazon Basin \u2013 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">roughly 30% of the land<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is Indigenous territory \u2013 the conference offers a historic opportunity to recognize Indigenous Peoples as key climate actors.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Amazon\u2019s Territorial Voices<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In October 2025, the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA) and its affiliates convened in Brazil to consolidate regional demands. As their statement affirms: <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWithout demarcation, there is no mitigation.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The COParente Cycle: Preparing from the Ground Up<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To ensure meaningful participation at COP30, Brazil\u2019s Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) and the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (FUNAI), together with APIB and the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), launched the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COParente Cycle<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, aiming to inform and mobilize Indigenous Peoples to participate in COP30 and plan their leadership&#8217;s influence in global climate negotiations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Between 2024 and 2025, Indigenous leaders and communicators received negotiation training, selected delegates, and crafted unified messages for Bel\u00e9m during <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">14 regional meetings<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> across Brazil. The process strengthened representation and informed communities about the technical dimensions of climate diplomacy\u2014bridging the territory and the negotiating table.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brazil\u2019s Inclusive COP Presidency<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assuming the COP30 presidency, Brazil has sought to expand public participation and highlight Indigenous perspectives. The Commission\u2019s goal: guarantee both greater numbers and stronger credentials for Indigenous participation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An estimated <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3,000 Indigenous participants<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1,000 accredited leaders<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, are expected in Bel\u00e9m\u2014making COP30 the most inclusive climate conference in UN history.
