It\u2019s the Paris Agreement\u2019s framework for countries to cooperate through carbon markets.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over the past decade, carbon markets and carbon credit integrity have significantly increased, rules have aligned, and this UN carbon crediting system has officially come online. This year in Bel\u00e9m, COP30 isn\u2019t about renegotiating those rules; it\u2019s about making them work \u2013 and making sure nature is part of the picture so finance reaches the people and ecosystems that can deliver near-term climate wins.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A decade of progress<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over the past decade, Article 6 has moved from design to implementation. The Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM) set the vision in 2015, and at Glasgow (COP26), Parties finalized the core Article 6 package that unlocked international cooperation. Glasgow also catalyzed momentum for forest finance through initiatives like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/1b-leaf-coalition-game-changer-fight-save-tropical-forests-support-indigenous-communities-and\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">LEAF Coalition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and high-level pledges to halt and reverse deforestation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fast forward to 2024: after four years of stalled negotiations, Parties <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/historic-article-6-decision-cop29-after-much-debate-reasoned-solution\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">officially adopted<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the set of rules underpinning Article 6.4 at COP29 and established the rules for trading under Article 6.2. The outcome put cooperation on firmer footing \u2013 from clarifying how countries account and report under 6.2, to setting a workplan for the Article 6.4 crediting mechanism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While there are no formal Article 6 negotiations again until 2028, the focus now is getting the technical rules and integrity guardrails right as implementation accelerates toward Bel\u00e9m and beyond.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The ecosystem that makes Article 6 work<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">International carbon credits haven\u2019t improved in a vacuum. Over the years, an intentional choreography between international decision makers, national policymakers, and independent standards bodies has begun to align, providing clarity to market actors on what counts as real, high-integrity mitigation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) \u2013 founded in 2021 \u2013 has established <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/core-carbon-principles\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Core Carbon Principles<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and an integrity label, giving governments and buyers a shared benchmark for quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI) has outlined <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcmintegrity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Roadmap_Final.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">credible corporate claims<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, aligning demand with high-quality supply.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Initiatives for social and environmental integrity \u2013 like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carboncreditquality.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carbon Credit Quality Initiative<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tfciguide.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tropical Forest Credit Integrity<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> guide \u2013 have helped policymakers and buyers navigate credit quality landscapes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carbon credit rating agencies, such as Calyx Global, Sylvera, BeZero and MSCI have been improving our understanding of the technical underpinning of many carbon credit methodologies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Increasingly sophisticated data providers bring new advances in monitoring and reporting of carbon emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Financial authorities such as IOSCO are also leaning in, providing guidance in relation to contractual, legal, and accounting matters.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Domestic markets have also leaned into quality and transparency within national rules:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kenya has legally mandated community benefit-sharing for carbon projects via Community Development Agreements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Singapore has established an International Carbon Credit framework that allows limited use of eligible credits with corresponding-adjustment requirements and clear buyer guidance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The United Kingdom has put forward government principles to align its voluntary market with high-integrity standards, explicitly anchoring to ICVCM and VCMI.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Together, these pieces reinforce one another: clearer standards raise supply quality, and clearer claims increase confident demand. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The result is a more legitimate, more interoperable international market that coalesces around what \u2018good\u2019 looks like \u2013 especially for nature and forests.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As quality markers converge, the next step is alignment on the UN side: bringing Article 6.4 online in a way that includes nature and drives finance toward the communities stewarding it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UN crediting is switching on \u2013 and nature must plug in<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The UN\u2019s carbon-crediting system is beginning to run: its first methodology (landfill gas) was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodity-insights\/en\/news-research\/latest-news\/energy-transition\/103125-un-backs-landfill-gas-as-first-article-64-methodology-to-transition-from-cdm#:~:text=UN%20backs%20landfill%20gas%20as%20first%20Article%206.4%20methodology%20to%20transition%20from%20CDM,-By%20Irina%20Breilean&amp;text=The%20UN%20has%20approved%20a,30.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">approved<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> earlier this week. The next test is simple: will nature be part of it?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recent draft rules to manage \u2018non-permanence\u2019 (i.e., the risk of future losses) aim to protect integrity, but if set too rigidly, they could push forests and other land-based activities out of scope. There is no credible path to a stable climate without conserving and restoring nature. Shutting the door would slow near-term gains and restrict Indigenous Peoples and local communities from accessing sorely needed finance. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/media-libraries\/mlmEWUxEY7eQ\/files\/83558608ab1ed1f7c3466692cfd91bb8b73b296e.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">better approach<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is to manage risk without closing the door by using strong buffers and long-term stewardship, setting realistic and ambitious baselines, and continuously improving as data gets better.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is where COP30 matters. Countries are not renegotiating the rulebook this year, but they can steer implementation so Article 6.4 includes nature under workable, science-based standards \u2013 turning clearer rules into tangible results for people, forests, and the climate.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, the wider market is taking the lead: the ICVCM has already approved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/edf-commends-integrity-councils-approval-redd-methodologies-step-forward-high-integrity\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">jurisdictional REDD+<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and Improved Forest Management methodologies under its CCP label, with similar decisions on nature credits like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/high-forest-low-deforestation\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">high forest, low deforestation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> expected soon.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond Bel\u00e9m<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One decade since Paris, the trajectory of carbon credits is unmistakable: rules have tightened, safeguards have strengthened, and credible finance is beginning to reach impactful initiatives. Integrity is higher, and alignment is growing across countries, companies, and standards. As a result, we are starting to unlock funding that can protect forests and support communities in ways that can be measured and trusted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The direction of travel is already set across the broader market.
