Forests had a strong presence throughout the week, which included more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonclimateactionweek.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">700 events and brought together around 45,000<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> participants from different regions and sectors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are three major highlights that show how forests took the spotlight, each one pointing to important areas of progress and focus:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF)<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Led by Brazil and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tanahair.net\/brics-leaders-endorse-fund-to-conserve-tropical-forests\/#:~:text=July%2010%2C%202025,state%20and%20government%20on%20Sunday.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">supported by BRICS<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and global partners, the initiative aims to mobilize up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2480356-could-a-125-billion-investment-fund-halt-global-deforestation\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">US\u202f$125\u202fbillion<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to provide performance-based payments to tropical forest countries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ensuring long-term finance and inclusion of Indigenous communities. TFFF is designed to complement, not substitute, current forest finance approaches such as REDD+ and carbon markets. Building on these tools, it expands the chances for tropical forest nations to gain recognition and compensation for preserving forests, reducing emissions, and safeguarding biodiversity and water systems<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In London, TFFF gained strong momentum. Countries such as the UK, Norway, Colombia, Indonesia, DRC, and Ghana expressed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clubmadrid.org\/the-tropical-forest-forever-facility-showcases-global-progress-at-london-climate-week-2025\/#:~:text=Government%20Support:%20TFFF%20received%20public,in%20support%20of%20the%20TFFF.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">support<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, along with leaders from the private sector, Indigenous organizations, and major NGOs. During one of these events, Brazil\u2019s Minister of Indigenous Peoples, S\u00f4nia Guajajara, confirmed the TFFF\u2019s commitment to allocate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cop30.br\/en\/news-about-cop30\/in-london-countries-express-support-for-the-tropical-forests-forever-fund#:~:text=%E2%80%9C%E2%80%9CThis%20is%20not%20Brasil's%20proposal,mechanism%2C%E2%80%9D%20the%20minister%20affirmed.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">at least 20%<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of its funding to Indigenous and traditional communities, an unprecedented allocation at this scale.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">REDD+ and Jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD)<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Several high-level events focused on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calyxglobal.com\/research-hub\/research\/an-introduction-to-jurisdictional-REDD\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">REDD+ and JREDD<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Government officials from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcintel.com\/carbon\/article\/brazilian-state-aims-to-issue-390m-jredd-credits-by-2027-38845.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Brazil<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artredd.org\/art-publishes-trees-concept-for-perus-indigenous-jurisdictional-redd-program-on-the-art-registry\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Peru<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcintel.com\/carbon\/article\/indonesian-province-eyes-art-trees-standard-for-jredd-scheme-43551.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indonesia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emergentclimate.com\/costa-rica-and-ghana-agree-landmark-deals-to-supply-forest-carbon-credits-to-leaf-coalition-buyers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ghana<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hanoitimes.vn\/vietnam-to-receive-over-us50-million-from-carbon-credit-sale-326501.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vietnam<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fanamc.com\/english\/ethiopia-aims-to-generate-70-million-revenue-from-carbon-trading\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ethiopia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> shared updates on their progress and investment readiness. At the same time, investors called for clearer frameworks and trustworthy transactions. The message was clear: supply and demand are growing, but there is an urgent need to move from planning to action with fair and reliable deals in place before COP30.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Still, challenges remain. One major concern is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sylvera.com\/blog\/increase-carbon-project-quality-price\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">gap between carbon credit prices and the actual costs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of implementing REDD+ programs. Jurisdictions are responsible for complex and often expensive processes, including legal requirements, safeguards, and reporting systems, just to access payments. Delays in issuing carbon credits, caused by technical barriers and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/infocongo.org\/en\/who-is-really-bearing-the-cost-of-redd\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">underestimating real costs of implementing REDD+<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, have also created frustration for many stakeholders, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/05\/indigenous-groups-voice-support-for-redd-despite-flaws\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indigenous Peoples<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, local communities, and public agencies. These delays often extend beyond political cycles, putting at risk the support and momentum needed on the ground.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To move forward, it is crucial to build proof-of-concept cases in countries where credits are already being issued. These examples can help others learn, stay motivated, and see the value, both economic and social, of REDD+ and JREDD implementation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wildfires and forest resilience<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Extreme <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/heres-how-climate-change-affects-wildfires\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wildfires<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are both a cause and result of climate change. They threaten ecosystems, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wildfiretaskforce.org\/sierra-nevada-regional-profile\/carbon-storage\/#:~:text=Carbon%20sequestration%20has%20declined%20due,more%20carbon%2Dintensive%20energy%20production.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">carbon storage<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and human lives. Responding to them means improving forest governance, providing more funding, and recognizing the role of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/fire\/indigenous-fire-practices-shape-our-land.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">traditional fire knowledge<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Supporting cultural fire practices and local strategies in combination with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/firesat-first-satellite-constellation-launched-key-step-forward-managing-global-wildfire-management\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">right technology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> can reduce fire risks and strengthen the connection between climate, biodiversity, and land management.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During LCAW 2025, wildfires were a discussion topic. One key event, hosted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalwildfirecollective.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Global Wildfire Collective<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with academic and government partners, looked at the impacts of extreme fires <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonclimateactionweek.org\/event\/integrated-strategies-for-wildfire-resilience-recovery-in-climate-biodiversity-land-health\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">from environmental to public health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> threats. Speakers including scientists, policymakers, NGOs, exchanged ideas on how to build resilience. They stressed the importance of blending science with local knowledge and called for stronger global coordination. Strengthening forest resilience is essential, not only to reduce the damage from extreme wildfires, but also to preserve natural wildfire regimes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Looking ahead: from London to New York<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As LCAW came to a close, a few urgent messages stood out: The urgency for more flexible and directly accessible climate finance to kickstart and scale local initiatives was a recurring call throughout the week, and the importance of putting communities, especially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2025\/01\/29\/indigenous-peoples-local-communities-road-to-cop30\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indigenous Peoples<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at the heart of climate action. Another emerging theme was the growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) in the climate agenda.
