C<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">urrent pledges would only reduce emissions 4-10% below 2019 levels by 2030 \u2013 far short of the 42% reduction needed <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">to limit warming to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\"> 1.5\u00b0C.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\"> These gaps are corroborated by the <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW119690901 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/new-un-climate-change-report-shows-national-climate-plans-fall-miles-short-of-what-s-needed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW119690901 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement Synthesis report<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\"> by the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">UNFCCC <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">secretariat<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">which <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">noted that<em> \u201c<\/em><\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">bolder new climate plans are vital to drive stronger investment, economic growth and opportunity, more jobs, less pollution, better health and lower costs, more secure and affordable clean energy, among many others benefits<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW119690901 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW119690901 BCX0\">\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">While these gaps are alarming,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\"> we have the solutions to address them<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119690901 BCX0\">. In fact, the report reveals a crucial window of opportunity as countries prepare their next Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for submission in 2025. Through immediate, decisive action on NDCs, we can bridge the gap and put ourselves back on track to 1.5.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW119690901 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reflecting on the report recommendations, these are three strategic areas to help bridge the gap in countries\u2019 updated NDCs: <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First<\/span>,<b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> comprehensive investment planning<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> must become central to NDC development. Countries should include detailed project pipelines that identify specific, bankable projects aligned with sectoral transformation pathways. These plans should outline clear implementation timelines, risk mitigation strategies, and resource requirements. Critically, they must demonstrate how public finance can leverage private investment at the necessary scale.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Second, NDCs must <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">strengthen coverage and transparency<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> across all sectors and gases. Particular attention should focus on methane emissions, where rapid reductions could have immediate climate benefits. Many countries have encouragingly incorporated methane into their NDCs &#8211;<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the 2024 NDC synthesis reports suggests that 91% of parties cover methane within their mitigation targets. However,<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> only 5% of parties have specific quantified methane targets, <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">demonstrating a significant area for improvement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Third, countries must reimagine climate finance through a just transition lens. This means moving beyond simple volume targets to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emphasize finance quality:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> its accessibility, predictability, and alignment with development priorities. For developing economies, which require an eight to sixteenfold increase in climate investment by 2030, NDCs should clearly distinguish between unconditional actions and those requiring international support. They should also outline specific measures to ensure transitions benefit vulnerable communities and workers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/\/Slide1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24380 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/\/Slide1.jpg\" alt=\"Elements for NDC enhancement in 2025\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/Slide1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/Slide1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/Slide1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The upcoming NDC revision cycle is a rare opportunity to fundamentally reshape climate ambition and action. By focusing on these three areas \u2013 comprehensive investment planning, enhanced sectoral coverage and transparency, and quality climate finance for just transitions \u2013 countries can develop NDCs that not only raise ambition but also chart practical pathways for implementation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The solutions and financing approaches exist to close the emissions gap. What&#8217;s needed now is the political will to deploy them at unprecedented speed and scale through this critical NDC revision process.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2024 presents stark findings on the state of global climate action.
