It takes due diligence to get this right, and changes are underway to make the process easier.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">New guidance on high-integrity carbon credits from an independent governance body has important implications for all credit categories, including those generated by the agricultural sector. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/\/agroforestry.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-23590 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/\/agroforestry-1024x339.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/agroforestry-1024x339.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/agroforestry-300x99.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/agroforestry-768x254.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/agroforestry.png 1216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market, also known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ICVCM<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, recently lau<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nched its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/the-core-carbon-principles\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Core Carbon Principles,<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"none\">known as CCPs, a set of definitive global threshold standards <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> carbon credit quality. Soon, the ICVCM will begin an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/assessment-framework\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">assessment process<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"none\">to determine whether carbon-crediting programs meet the CCP criteria, and whether certain carbon credit categories can be fast-tracked for CCP-approval or need to be more deeply evaluated to determine their eligibility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The ICVCM will issue CCP-approval labels for carbon credits, a demarcation intended to build trust in the voluntary carbon market and unlock investment by making it easier for buyers to recognize and put a price on high-integrity carbon credits.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While CCP-approval decisions have not yet been made for agriculture credit types, the recently released guidance provides insight into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2023\/08\/01\/navigating-the-core-carbon-principles-and-the-landscape-of-guidance-toward-a-high-integrity-carbon-market\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">key considerations<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"none\">for making those determinations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here\u2019s what their criteria may look like in practice for the agriculture sector. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">1. Carbon credits for agroforestry, agricultural soil carbon sequestration, and grassland and rangeland management mitigation activities may be eligible for the CCP-approved label but with elevated safeguards to mitigate the risk of releasing stored emissions.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The past several years have seen a boom in credit issuance and purchasing for activities that take greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere and store them, including enhanced soil carbon sequestration on agricultural lands.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">However, buyers sh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">uld bear in mind that the ICVCM determined that agroforestry, soil carbon sequestration on croplands and grassland\/rangeland management \u2014 along with strategies to store and protect other natural carbon reservoirs \u2014 have a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/CCP-Section-4-R2-FINAL-26Jul23.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">substantial risk of reversal<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or non-permanence of climate benefits. This could be due to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a change in land use or management or uncontrollable climate events such as droughts, floods, warming temperatures and fires. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The ICVCM guidance requires project developers to monitor, report and compensate for reversals for a minimum of 40 years to account for such reversals. This would not play out at the individual farm level, but rather by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> maintaining and managing an aggregate project-level buffer pool of robust backfill carbon credits, which would be held on reserve as an insurance mechanism against the loss of stored carbon. Per the CCP guidance, buffer pools would need to meet credit composition, transparency and other management requirements.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Such safeguards against reversals could potentially open the door to the CCP-approval label if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/agricultural-soil-carbon-credits-protocol-synthesis.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">other quantification and verification issues <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">are also addressed, giving buyers more confidence in these credit categories. Some crediting programs already follow these requirements, while others will need to make improvements for their credits to qualify for the label.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">2. Categories of carbon credits that prevent or permanently reduce methane emissions from livestock operations are likely to be eligible, with a chance of being fast-tracked for CCP-approval.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Buyers should be aware that there is an urgent need to mobilize capital to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">fund practices and technologies that avoid livestock methane emissions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vitalsigns.edf.org\/story\/farmers-scientists-seek-solutions-global-warming-caused-cows\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Livestock operations<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are a major contributor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to global methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that has more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/impact2021.edf.org\/the-methane-moment\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">80 times<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">after its release.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Another independent assessment body for carbon crediting methodologies \u2014 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carboncreditquality.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carbon Credit Quality Initiative<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a collaborative initiative between EDF, World Wildlife Fund and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00d6ko-Institut<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 \u2014 already <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">found that there is a strong need for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">carbon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> market revenues to make projects such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carboncreditquality.org\/download\/Assessments\/1.1.3%20Industrial%20biodigesters%20fed%20with%20livestock%20manure%20%2831%20January%202023%29.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">industrial-scaled<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carboncreditquality.org\/download\/Assessments\/1.1.4%20Household%20Biodigesters%20%2831%20January%202023%29.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">household-scaled<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> biodigesters fed with livestock manure financially viable for farmers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/\/dairy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-23591\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/\/dairy-1024x325.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/dairy-1024x325.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/dairy-300x95.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/dairy-768x243.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/dairy.png 1227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Given the clear economic need and permanence of these avoided emissions, these credit categories may be eligible for a fast-track to the CCP-approval label.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are critical opportunities within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/agriculture-climate-pathways\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"> agriculture sector to avoid and remove climate-warming emissions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and quality assurance guardrails are essential to creating confidence in a carbon market that works for farmers, credit buyers and all entities in between.
