But there\u2019s also a movement underway to develop heavy-duty electric vehicles \u2013 like freight trucks and buses \u2013 that could have sweeping benefits for the climate, public health, and American jobs.<\/p>\n<p>At EDF, we just released a new report, <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.edf.org%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2F2021-03%2FHD_ZEV_White_Paper.pdf&amp;data=04%7C01%7Csstein%40edf.org%7Cee51f1b9f47e493d65d308d8df3f2124%7Cfe4574edbcfd4bf0bde843713c3f434f%7C0%7C0%7C637504809537284156%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=9eopC5H4wvqO6Cy3lLUA9KRST6JYJWncxu2j1jFCNkI%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Clean Trucks, Clean Air, American Jobs<\/a>, that analyzes the effects of eliminating tailpipe pollution from those medium and heavy-duty vehicles \u2013 including buses, semis and other long-haul trucks, and the \u201clast-mile\u201d trucks that deliver packages to American homes.<\/p>\n<p>Our report found that a rapid transition to zero-emitting freight trucks and buses will significantly reduce dangerous air pollution \u2013 pollution that disproportionately burdens lower income neighborhoods and communities of color.<\/p>\n<p>Air pollution standards that ensure all new heavy-duty trucks and buses sold for urban and community use are zero-emitting by 2035, and <em>all<\/em> such vehicles sold are zero-emission by 2040, would:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prevent a sum total of more than <strong>57,000 premature deaths<\/strong> by 2050<\/li>\n<li>Eliminate a sum total of more than <strong>4.7 billion metric tons of climate pollution<\/strong> by 2050.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significantly reduce two main components of smog<\/strong> \u2013 nitrogen oxides pollution by a sum total of more than 10 million tons by 2050, and particulate pollution by a sum total of almost 200,000 tons by 2050<\/li>\n<li><strong>Save $485 billion in health and environmental benefits<\/strong> alone as a result of pollution reductions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Heavy-duty trucks and buses are a major source of the unhealthy air pollution that puts all Americans at risk, with the health burden disproportionately impacting people of color and lower income families. More than 20,000 Americans die prematurely each year as a result of motor vehicle pollution on our roads and highways.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy-duty trucks and buses are only about four percent of all vehicles on our roads, but they are the largest contributor to oxides of nitrogen pollution and particulate pollution of all highway vehicles. People who live closest to our nation\u2019s roads, highways, ports, freight depots and distribution centers face the greatest health risks from that pollution.<\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s heavy-duty trucks and buses are also responsible for more than 420 million tons of climate pollution each year \u2013 more than the entire country of Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Momentum is quickly building for a transition to clean trucks in the medium and heavy-duty sector. The Biden campaign set a goal that all new buses be zero emissions by 2030, and major truck manufacturers including Daimler, Volvo, Cummins, General Motors, and Ford are investing in clean technologies and setting targets to eliminate tailpipe pollution by mid-century.
