As our leaders consider how to contain the coronavirus, create jobs and address environmental injustice, they have a chance to make some big changes that are long overdue.<\/p>\n<p>We can power up the economy and reduce air and climate pollution by building more clean trucks, buses, cars and clean energy<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>All of this will move us toward a healthier and more prosperous future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It starts with building more electric trucks, buses and cars \u2013 right here in America<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transitioning to a zero-emission transportation sector will put over one million people to work, save thousands of lives, build up our domestic manufacturing base and make American businesses more competitive.<\/li>\n<li>A clean transportation system has the potential to bring good jobs as well as significant health benefits to communities of color and lower-income communities, who are more likely to live near highways and be directly exposed to harmful soot and smog pollution.<\/li>\n<li>The goal of <strong>all new cars to be zero polluting by 2035, and all new trucks and buses to be zero polluting by 2040<\/strong> is achievable: every major truck, bus and car manufacturer is already developing or investing in all-electric, zero-emission vehicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To achieve the scale needed to transform the transportation sector, we need Congress to:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-20842\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/DRXTTC-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/DRXTTC-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/DRXTTC-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/DRXTTC-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/DRXTTC-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/DRXTTC-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/>Support domestic manufacturing of electric vehicles, batteries and component parts.<\/li>\n<li>Expand tax incentives and point-of-sale vouchers for zero-emissions cars and trucks.<\/li>\n<li>Provide grants to school districts to purchase zero-emissions, electric school buses.<\/li>\n<li>Fund state and local agencies developing electric vehicle charging infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure low-income communities, communities of color and others hit hardest by climate change and air pollution are first in line to benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We must also transition to clean electric power to run our homes, farms, businesses and vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transitioning to clean energy will help boost our economy: Before the coronavirus recession, the sector was producing jobs 70% faster than the economy as a whole.<\/li>\n<li>Dirty power plants are a major source of air, water and climate pollution and often located in communities of color and low-income communities. By investing in clean energy and energy efficiency we can protect these communities, clean up our air and guarantee everyone access to reliable<br \/>\nand affordable energy.<\/li>\n<li>Over 87 million Americans are already getting service from an electric utility that&#8217;s moving to net zero emissions, but we need smart policies to reach our nationwide goal of <strong>100% clean electric power by 2035<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To accelerate progress, we need Congress to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-20843\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/34691230074_e498d5dd9f_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/34691230074_e498d5dd9f_c.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/34691230074_e498d5dd9f_c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2021\/01\/34691230074_e498d5dd9f_c-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/>Extend and expand clean energy tax credits for wind, solar, energy efficiency, and storage.<\/li>\n<li>Implement an ambitious Clean Electricity Standard &#8211; a program that limits how much climate pollution electric utilities can emit &#8211; that will reduce emissions at least 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2035.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in new transmission &amp; distribution infrastructure, and grid-scale energy storage.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that a significant percentage of investments are directed to frontline communities and areas that are losing fossil fuel industry jobs to ensure a just transition for workers.<\/li>\n<li>Double funding for clean energy research and development, including significant increases to the budget of ARPA-E, a government agency that helps companies commercialize promising breakthrough energy technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>American innovation makes these ambitious goals achievable<strong>. <\/strong>We have a long history of entrepreneurs, scientists and engineers tackling big challenges, and this is no different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s get to work creating healthier communities by building clean trucks, buses, cars and clean energy.
