{"id":20000,"date":"2020-04-22T07:33:48","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T12:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=20000"},"modified":"2020-04-22T14:30:57","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T19:30:57","slug":"this-isnt-your-parents-earth-day-talking-unlikely-paths-to-environmentalism-with-edfs-diverse-partners-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2020\/04\/22\/this-isnt-your-parents-earth-day-talking-unlikely-paths-to-environmentalism-with-edfs-diverse-partners-team\/","title":{"rendered":"This isn\u2019t your parents&#8217; Earth Day: Talking unlikely paths to environmentalism with EDF\u2019s Diverse Partners team\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year we have reached Earth Day not only as the country continues to face unimaginable death tolls, but especially as there is an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/04\/01\/824874977\/underlying-health-disparities-could-mean-coronavirus-hits-some-communities-harde\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> increasing understanding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the ways the coronavirus is compounding existing injustices in our country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EDF and EDF Action are very fortunate to have recently hired two amazing women, Elise Nelson Leary and Esther Sosa, to lead our engagement work with Latino, African American and other diverse community partners. We recently had a remote conversation with them to reflect on their current work and past experiences with Earth Day and the environmental movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cI would never have categorized my family as environmentalists\u2026but that doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t care about the earth and its resources<\/b><b>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Question: <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What were <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">your first memories of Earth Day? I remember it as an outdoor party&#8212; we got out of class, there was music, dancing, and we went outside. As a serious child, the message to\u00a0 \u201clove the Earth\u201d didn&#8217;t quite resonate with me. I remember being confused, as I had never heard my family talking about this holiday. I would never have categorized my family as environmentalists. We didn\u2019t even recycle (Gasp!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even today, my family doesn\u2019t actively celebrate Earth Day, but that doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t care about the earth and its resources. When I think about my childhood, I realize my parents always taught me to shut off the lights when I left the room, take short showers to save water and reuse plastic bags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20004\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20004\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20004 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/Elise-kid-photo-e1587494009166-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/Elise-kid-photo-e1587494009166-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/Elise-kid-photo-e1587494009166-655x1024.jpg 655w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/Elise-kid-photo-e1587494009166.jpg 763w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elise as a child<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s been a good lesson with partners and policymakers too: they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">might be coming from a different place, but the shared values are there. I try to explain our work using the same language I would use to talk to my family and that has made people much more receptive to our work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Esther:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Coming from New York City I did not ever think twice about water, although I vaguely remember my mom giving me a small cup of water to brush my teeth every night. She would say, \u201cno mas agua\u201d I knew that was my ration for the night, but never thought twice about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20003\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20003 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/ES-water-e1587493980605.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"296\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Esther Sosa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, I quickly understood why when we moved back to the town in Mexico where my parents grew up to care for my sick\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">grandparents. I was five at the time, and water came twice a week; I remember that my job was to wait by the faucet until the water came. I was responsible for alerting everyone when the water arrived. I ran around shouting \u201cThe water is here!\u201d this would then lead to a mass coordinated mobilization where everyone had one goal: fill as many buckets as we could before the water shut off. Missing this call meant no water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This experience truly shaped my relationship with our natural resources and with Mother Earth. I understood that potable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">water meant survival for communities, my family included.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cI feel a responsibility to advocate for the needs of communities like my own, who often go unheard on environmental issues&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Q: What\u2019s your background? How did you end up in this field? How does your background help the work you do?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Elise:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I studied urban renewal policy in school and became interested in climate resilience and its impact on communities while working <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for local government. I definitely wouldn\u2019t say I\u2019ve always been drawn to environmentalism, though understanding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the impact of policy and urban design on community development efforts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and their disproportionate impacts on Black communities have long interested me.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m also a history enthusiast and I enjoy learning how public policies in our country developed. I saw how my family has directly benefited from policies to help fund education and to buy homes. This makes me believe in the power of smart government policies to address problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I like this role because I get to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">help partners realize pollution policies do impact their constituencies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Politics moves quickly and it\u2019s great to see that EDF, and many other organizations, are realizing that they can reach their goals faster if they make sure they are more inclusive and purposeful in outreach to diverse communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20002\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20002\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20002 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/ES_hike_crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/ES_hike_crop.jpg 288w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2020\/04\/ES_hike_crop-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Esther on her travels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Esther:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> After graduating from college, I was curious to see how my experiences fit into a global narrative, so I left the United States to backpack across South America. On this journey I had two goals, to gain greater self-awareness and to explore the environmental challenges that other communities face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My experience with water scarcity piqued my interest in understanding how other families were experiencing climate change. I lived in a favela in Brazil, trekked up glaciers in Peru visiting and listening to locals along the way, and connected with individuals living in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Atacama Desert in Chile, home to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Latin America\u2019s largest solar power plant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of these experiences reinforced that the burden of adaptation to drastic and irreversible environmental change falls disproportionately on poor communities. I learned these places halfway across the world were not that different than the community where I grew up. I learned that we share a collective desire to protect our Pachamama and our people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These experiences brought me to EDF, and while I\u2019m here, I feel a responsibility to advocate for the needs of communities like my own, who often go unheard on environmental issues, but whose survival depends on a healthy planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Q: Lastly, let\u2019s end on a fun note: What music gets you pumped up to do the work?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Elise:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Music is such a necessary tool to keep my energy up.
