Weiser has expressed a firm commitment to environmental protection and conservation, has <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/news\/energy-environment-are-crux-of-colorado-attorney-general-battle-between\/article_f4822fd6-b1fa-11e8-a214-1781c1cddec7.html\">promised to defend<\/a> the rule of law, and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradoindependent.com\/2018\/10\/22\/weiser-brauchler-trump\/\">vowed to combat<\/a> President Trump\u2019s aggressive, health-harming rollbacks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Weiser marks a welcome change from Colorado\u2019s last Attorney General, Cynthia Coffman, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpr.org\/news\/story\/coffman-cites-10th-amendment-suing-feds-halt-clean-power-plan\">sued in an attempt to stop<\/a> the Clean Power Plan \u2014 our first-ever national limits on power plant carbon pollution \u2014 despite widespread support from the public, her own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2018\/03\/01\/colorado-donald-trump-epa-clean-power-plan\/\">state\u2019s governor<\/a>, and the Colorado public health and environmental department.<\/p>\n<p>Coffman also <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradopolitics.com\/federal-court-methane-colorado\/\">declined to represent<\/a> Colorado in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/governor\/sites\/default\/files\/motion_of_the_state_of_colorado_for_leave_to_intervene_in_support_of_petitioners.pdf\">efforts to limit methane pollution<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/jnswire.s3.amazonaws.com\/jns-media\/4b\/86\/804609\/AGsclimatechange.pdf\">fought to prevent<\/a> cities from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/san-francisco-sue-2487934170.html\">holding energy companies accountable<\/a> for their role in exacerbating climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michigan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dana Nessel has just started her term as Attorney General of Michigan. Nessel has publicly declared her intention to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lansingstatejournal.com\/story\/news\/local\/2018\/10\/09\/what-you-need-know-michigan-attorney-general-candidates\/1498979002\/\">hold chemical companies accountable for PFAS<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2018\/10\/dana-nessel-tom-leonard-the-future-of-the-flint-water-crisis-is-on-the-november-ballot\/\">promised to re-evaluate<\/a> what she has characterized as a \u201chighly suspect\u201d investigation into the Flint water crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Nessel replaces former Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, a staunch opponent of basic environmental protections who <a href=\"http:\/\/sblog.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Petition-for-Writ-of-Certiorari-final-1.pdf\">spearheaded a years-long legal battle<\/a> against EPA limits on mercury pollution from coal plants and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2018\/11\/01\/bill-schuette-pfas-pollution-wurtsmith\/1827697002\/\">repeatedly punted<\/a> on addressing water contamination from the chemical PFAS despite the considerable health risks.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Schuette\u2019s attempt to parlay his anti-environmental record into higher office ended in failure. He lost his bid to be Michigan\u2019s governor, and will now watch from the sidelines as his successor restores the rule of law to protect human health and the environment for the well-being of all in Michigan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wisconsin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Josh Kaul won the race for Attorney General of Wisconsin. Kaul has expressed a firm commitment to protecting clean air, clean water, and public health, and has promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/madison.com\/wsj\/news\/local\/govt-and-politics\/candidates-present-clear-cut-choices-on-environmental-issues\/article_b5eec034-630e-56b0-a48b-85860c0d0eba.html\">hold polluters accountable<\/a> for breaking the law.<\/p>\n<p>Kaul defeated the incumbent, Brad Schimel, who infamously <a href=\"https:\/\/bcpl.wisconsin.gov\/Shared%20Documents\/Board%20Meeting%20Docs\/2015\/Minutes_Apr-7.pdf\">voted to prohibit<\/a> employees of the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands from \u201cengaging in global warming or climate change work\u201d while on the job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nevada<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aaron Ford has just been sworn in as Nevada\u2019s top legal officer. In the run up to his election, Ford <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvsenatedems.com\/updates\/press-releases-2\/296-statement-from-senator-aaron-ford-on-attorney-general-laxalt-s-suit-against-clean-power-plan\">expressed strong support<\/a> for the Clean Power Plan and criticized the anti-environmental agenda pursued by his predecessor.<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing Attorney General, Adam Laxalt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/2016.02.23_nevada_consumers_research_amicus_brief_for_petrs.pdf\">actively opposed<\/a> the Clean Power Plan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/opinion\/commentary-nevada-attorney-general-adam-laxalt-urges-congress-to-confirm-scott-pruitt-as-epa-chief\/\">sang Scott Pruitt\u2019s praises<\/a> when endorsing him for EPA Administrator in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Like Michigan\u2019s Bill Schuette, Laxalt was unable to leverage his anti-environmental agenda into higher office. Laxalt was soundly beaten by Steve Sisolak in the race for Nevada Governor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Continuing the fight for public health and the environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beyond Colorado, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin, Attorneys General in several other states are set to continue efforts to protect public health and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmag.gov\/uploads\/PressRelease\/48737699ae174b30ac51a7eb286e661f\/Balderas___Coalition_of_States___Municipalities_Oppose_Trump_Administration%E2%80%99s_Efforts_to_Stall_Clean_Power_Plan_Case.pdf\">Hector Balderas<\/a> of New Mexico, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/news\/ag-healey-opposes-epas-illegal-repeal-of-clean-power-plan\">Maura Healey<\/a> of Massachusetts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/news\/maryland\/environment\/bs-md-maryland-clean-air-appeal-20180917-story.html\">Brian Frosh<\/a> of Maryland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/04\/27\/iowa-attorney-general-tom-miller-opposes-trump-repeal-clean-power-plan-coalition-wind-energy\/558039002\/\">Tom Miller<\/a> of Iowa, and <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2018\/10\/29\/vermont-attorney-opposes-epa-vehicle-emissions-rollback\/\">TJ Donovan<\/a> of Vermont are among the Attorneys General who have established impressive records of defending and enforcing health and environmental safeguards. Each was elected to a new term in November.<\/p>\n<p>Xavier Becerra, who was appointed Attorney General of California after his predecessor won a Senate seat, has <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/394064-leading-californias-legal-charge\">valiantly stood up for<\/a> the health and environment of his constituents. In November, Californians resoundingly elected him to a term of his own.<\/p>\n<p>Kwame Raoul is set to begin as Illinois\u2019 new Attorney General, and to continue his predecessor Lisa Madigan\u2019s record of defending and enforcing health and environmental safeguards. Raoul will be able to build on his work as State Senator, where he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=3005&amp;GAID=14&amp;DocTypeID=SB&amp;LegId=110471&amp;SessionID=91&amp;GA=100\">filed a bill<\/a> that would grant residents greater legal standing to sue over air pollution, contaminated water, and other concerns.<\/p>\n<p>In New York, newly-elected Attorney General Letitia James is positioned to build on the progress of her predecessor Barbara Underwood. In her new role, James has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/stories\/1060111253\/\">demonstrated leadership<\/a> in litigation to address climate-harming hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A pivotal moment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Election Day the American people used their votes to demand clean air, clean water, and a return to the rule of law.
