Millions of Americans \u2014 a majority of adults <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/03\/21\/climate\/how-americans-think-about-climate-change-in-six-maps.html?_r=0\">in every congressional district<\/a> \u2014 support limiting carbon emissions to guard against climate instability.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some highlights from the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2017\/03\/Statements-on-the-Rollback-of-the-Clean-Power-Plan-20170330.CYJ_.pdf\">many powerful statements<\/a> made in the last week:<\/p>\n<p>Leaders from at least 15 <strong>faith communities<\/strong> raised alarm at the dangerous impacts rolling back climate progress would have on America\u2019s most vulnerable communities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>United Church of Christ\u2019s<\/strong> national leadership <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucc.org\/ucc_leaders_the_earth_is_the_lords_03292017?recruiter_id=148006\">said<\/a>: \u201cBecause climate change makes all other injustice worse, now is the time for us to step up.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe Clean Power Plan [gives] states a framework for progress in the sacred work of safeguarding our earth\u2019s natural resources,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rac.org\/reform-jewish-leader-decries-executive-order-rolling-back-clean-power-plan\">affirmed<\/a> Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner on behalf of <strong>Reform Judaism <\/strong>groups<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe absence of a strong climate policy means more dangerous pollution that harms the unborn and children,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creationcare.org\/president_trump_takes_us_in_the_wrong_direction_on_climate_change_and_clean_energy\">warned<\/a> <strong>Evangelical Environmental Network <\/strong>President and CEO Mitch Hescox.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;This is a challenge for us,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-climatechange-trump-vatican-idUSKBN1711TV?il=0\">said<\/a> <strong>Vatican <\/strong>leader Cardinal Peter Turkson, a chief architect of the Pope\u2019s \u201c<em>Laudato S<\/em>i\u201d encyclical on climate change. \u201cFortunately, in the United States, there are dissenting voices, people who are against Trump\u2019s positions.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Health associations<\/strong> representing more than 500,000 doctors and medical experts emphasized the public health imperative of reducing air pollution and addressing climate change:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cImplementing the Clean Power Plan alone would prevent 90,000 asthma attacks and 3,600 premature deaths every year once fully in place, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lung.org\/about-us\/media\/press-releases\/american-lung-association-pledges-to-fight-trump-assault-on-clean-air.html\">wrote<\/a> the <strong>American Lung Association<\/strong>. \u201cOur nation needs these lifesaving protections.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/medsocietiesforclimatehealth.org\/latest-news\/statement-medical-society-consortium-climate-health\/\">said<\/a> \u201cAs medical professionals, many of our members know firsthand the harmful health effects of climate change on patients.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cClean air should not be a luxury, and it should not be determined by ZIP code,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en-us\/about-the-aap\/aap-press-room\/Pages\/CPPExecutiveOrder.aspx\">said<\/a> the <strong><strong>American Academy of Pediatrics.<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At least 75 <strong>mayors, state governors, and attorneys general<\/strong> who represent more than 149 million people \u2014 nearly half of the U.S. population \u2014 reiterated the need to combat climate change and protect the communities they serve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.pa.gov\/governor-wolf-statement-on-federal-climate-executive-order\/\">said<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cThe science of climate change is settled and the President\u2019s actions today turn the federal government\u2019s back on Pennsylvania\u2019s environment and our economy.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/governor\/news\/gov-hickenlooper-statement-president%E2%80%99s-executive-order-pulling-back-climate-policies\">said<\/a>: \u201cWe will keep building a clean energy future that creates Colorado jobs, improves our health and addresses the harmful consequences of a changing climate.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A coalition of 23 attorneys general and local legal counsels from states including <strong>California, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, <\/strong>and <strong>Virginia <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/ag-schneiderman-leads-coalition-states-and-localities-opposing-pres-trumps-efforts\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cWe won\u2019t hesitate to protect those we serve\u2014including by aggressively opposing in court President Trump\u2019s actions that ignore both the law and the critical importance of confronting the very real threat of climate change.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Mayors from 47 cities including <strong>Houston (TX), Knoxville (TN), Durham (NC), Fayetteville (AR), Los Angeles (CA), Chicago (IL), <\/strong>and<strong> New York City<\/strong>, released a <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@ClimateMayors\/climatemayors-letter-to-president-trump-on-roll-back-of-us-climate-actions-639389c80f1c\">letter<\/a> reading, \u201cClimate change is both the greatest single threat we face, and our greatest economic opportunity for our nation.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Power companies<\/strong> owning generating capacity able to power roughly two-thirds of all homes in the U.S. spoke out to recommit to providing ever more clean energy in the wake of the executive order. Here is a sample:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe intend\u00a0to\u00a0keep moving\u00a0forward with\u00a0a low-priced, clean energy strategy that\u00a0provides the\u00a0economical,\u00a0clean energy our customers want,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedenverchannel.com\/news\/politics\/trumps-order-undoing-anti-climate-change-efforts-draws-ire-of-colo-dems-applause-from-gop\">said\u00a0<\/a>Ben Fowke, CEO of <strong>Xcel Energy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cGoing forward, we anticipate an increase in renewable generation capacity and declining utilization of coal,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/despite-trump-move-utilities-shift-from-coal-is-set-to-continue-1490693406\">said<\/a> <strong>Southern Company <\/strong>spokesperson Terrell McCollum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;We will continue our transition to more natural gas and renewables as we balance out our generation portfolio and provide cleaner energy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-03-27\/trump-s-order-won-t-resurrect-jobs-of-miners-key-to-his-campaign\">said<\/a> a spokesperson for <strong>American Electric Power<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBecause of the competitive price of natural gas and the declining price of renewables, continuing to drive carbon out makes sense for us,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2017\/03\/trump-climate-eo\/520986\/\">said<\/a> <strong>Duke Energy<\/strong> CEO Lynn Good.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reducing carbon emissions and moving to cleaner sources of energy is good for business, say Fortune 500 companies including <strong>Apple, General Electric, and Walmart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe\u2019re disappointed the administration has decided to roll back climate regulations such as the Clean Power Plan and others,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/mar\/29\/climate-change-companies-challenge-trump-mars-staples-gap\">said<\/a> Edward Hoover, a senior executive at <strong>Mars Inc.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fighting climate change is \u201cgood for the business, our shareholders and customers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-03-30\/apple-wal-mart-stick-with-climate-pledges-despite-trump-s-pivot\">said<\/a> a <strong>Walmart<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe believe climate change should be addressed on a global basis,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/03\/trump-climate-change-immelt-236671\">wrote<\/a> <strong>General Electric <\/strong>CEO Jeff Immelt. \u201cWe hope that the United States continues to play a constructive role in furthering solutions to these challenges.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe believe that strong clean energy and climate policies, like the Clean Power Plan, can make renewable energy supplies more robust and address the serious threat of climate change while also supporting American competitiveness, innovation, and job growth,\u201d\u00a0a group of tech companies including <strong>Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon<\/strong> said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-03-30\/apple-wal-mart-stick-with-climate-pledges-despite-trump-s-pivot\">statement<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leading <strong>national security experts<\/strong> warned of the impact President Trump\u2019s order will have on American security.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The non-partisan <strong>American Security Project <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americansecurityproject.org\/asp-continues-to-support-real-energy-security\/\">said<\/a>: \u201cWhile energy independence is a credible goal, the actions suggested will not lead to real energy security. Rather, the order removes basic programs, such as the Clean Power Plan and climate resilient development, which bolster\u00a0the\u00a0security of our country.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alice Hill, a former resilience policy advisor to the National Security Council <\/strong>under President Obama <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/pundits-blog\/energy-environment\/326221-trumps-climate-change-order-jeopardizes-our-national\">said<\/a>: \u201cDeliberately ignoring the devastation brought by climate change will leave us anything but secure.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Officials who served administrations in both parties criticized moving backwards on climate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThis is not just dangerous; it\u2019s embarrassing to us and our businesses on a global scale to be dismissing opportunities for new technologies, economic growth, and U.S. leadership,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/trump-climate-executive-order-environmentalists_us_58d9ec2ae4b018c4606ae900\">said<\/a> <strong>Gina McCarthy<\/strong>, former EPA administrator under Barack Obama.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Asked about rumors the Trump Administration could abandon the Paris Agreement, <strong>Christine Todd Whitman<\/strong>, an EPA administrator under George W. Bush, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2017\/mar\/27\/paris-climate-treaty-faces-us-exit-after-donald-tr\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cWe lose any ability, any moral authority, to say to any other country, \u2018You have to clean up your act.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Trump\u2019s order &#8220;is reckless, arrogant policy that ignores the safety and well-being of our country and our children,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eenews.net\/climatewire\/2017\/03\/29\/stories\/1060052222\">said<\/a> former Special Envoy for Climate Change <strong>Todd Stern<\/strong>, who helped broker the Paris Agreement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Community organizers<\/strong> working for environmental justice condemned President Trump\u2019s attacks on America\u2019s most vulnerable communities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe decision by President Donald Trump to roll back the hard fought progress made on clean air and clean energy is extremely disappointing and dangerous,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naacp.org\/latest\/naacp-statement-president-trumps-executive-order-roll-back-climate-action\/\">said<\/a> <strong>NAACP President &amp; CEO Cornell William Brooks.<\/strong> \u201cWe are now on a dangerous path that puts workers, communities and the planet in harm\u2019s way.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Former Kentuckians for the Commonwealth chairperson Dana Beasley Brown <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kftc.org\/blog\/trump%E2%80%99s-climate-denials-take-away-opportunities-jobs-and-better-health-kentucky\">said<\/a>: \u201cAs Kentuckians, we have to work for the kinds of solutions we know can provide good jobs, allow people to stay and live in their communities, take care of their families, and not have to make the choice between being healthy and having a good job.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tom Goldtooth, executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenforall.org\/trump_s_executive_order_repeals_environmental_protections_hurts_people_he_claims_he_wants_to_help\">said<\/a> \u201cIndigenous peoples will not stand idle as we tell the world the Earth is the source of life to be protected, not merely a resource to be exploited and abused.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>President Trump\u2019s executive order will only take us backwards to an era of more pollution and more disease.<\/p>\n<p>But it is clear from the overwhelming pushback that community leaders, businesses, and health and security experts, as well as millions of Americans across the country, support maintaining strong climate and public health protections and moving forward on clean energy \u2014 not turning back the clock.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more responses to last week\u2019s Executive Order <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2017\/03\/Statements-on-the-Rollback-of-the-Clean-Power-Plan-20170330.CYJ_.pdf\">here<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Charlie Jiang President Trump\u2019s executive order seeking to unravel critical public health and climate protections \u2014 including the Clean Power Plan \u2014 is being met with strong rebuttals and a clear demonstration of ongoing climate leadership from across the country.
