{"id":13096,"date":"2016-04-14T15:30:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-14T20:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=13096"},"modified":"2016-05-12T20:22:15","modified_gmt":"2016-05-13T01:22:15","slug":"american-cities-are-defending-the-clean-power-plan-in-court-even-against-their-own-state-politicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2016\/04\/14\/american-cities-are-defending-the-clean-power-plan-in-court-even-against-their-own-state-politicians\/","title":{"rendered":"American Cities are Defending the Clean Power Plan in Court \u2013 Even Against their Own State Politicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pop quiz: what do these cities have in common?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boise, Idaho<\/li>\n<li>Grand Rapids, Michigan<\/li>\n<li>Houston, Texas<\/li>\n<li>Knoxville, Tennessee<\/li>\n<li>Reno, Nevada<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The answer may surprise you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These cities have joined a coalition of 54 cities, counties, and mayors to file an amicus, or \u201cfriend of the court,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/2016.04.01_cities_amicus_brief_for_epa.pdf\">brief<\/a> to support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/a-new-federal-clean-power-plan\">Clean Power Plan<\/a> \u2014 our nation\u2019s first-ever standards to limit dangerous carbon pollution from power plants \u2013 against litigation brought by some of our nation\u2019s largest polluters and their allies.<\/p>\n<p>These 54 cities joined six additional major municipalities that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/cities_and_states.pdf\">filed<\/a> in support of the Clean Power Plan as intervenors in the case.<\/p>\n<p>In total, <b>sixty municipalities<\/b> are on record supporting the Clean Power Plan as sensible, cost-effective clean air measures that will deploy innovative climate solutions and protect millions of Americans from adverse impacts. It\u2019s yet another example showing that support for the Clean Power Plan covers our whole country.<\/p>\n<p>Power companies, state and local officials in <b>forty-one<\/b> states are also supporting the Clean Power Plan in court \u2013 either through their attorney general\u2019s office, a local power company, or a municipality.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13340\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13340\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2016\/05\/CPP_supportMap1_711x533px_09.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13340\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13340\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2016\/05\/CPP_supportMap1_711x533px_09-1024x767.png\" alt=\"18 states, the District of Columbia, 60 municipalities and 11 utilities have filed in support of the Clean Power Plan. All generating assets were identified from company websites.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The extensive coalition of cities is defending the Clean Power Plan because cities are the first responders when it comes to addressing climate change impacts \u2014 and these communities are already getting hit hard, along with many others across the country.<\/p>\n<p>In the brief:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seven Florida cities, including <b>Miami<\/b>, highlighted how sea level rise is taking a grim toll on their welfare \u2014 including hundreds of millions of dollars being spent now on protecting critical infrastructure, and the creation of a long-term threat to drinking water supplies and insurance availability.<\/li>\n<li>Other coastal cities, including <b>Houston<\/b>, <b>Baltimore<\/b>, and <b>Jersey City<\/b>, experienced billions of dollars in damage from enormous, destructive storm surges caused by superstorms like Hurricanes Ike, Isabel, Katrina, Rita, and Sandy.<\/li>\n<li>Western cities, including <b>Fort Collins<\/b>, <b>Missoula<\/b>, and <b>Portland, <\/b>emphasized how increased heat waves intensify and worsen dangerous, deadly wildfires.<\/li>\n<li><b>Dallas<\/b>, <b>Boulder County<\/b>, and <b>Madison<\/b> each faced extraordinary, record-setting rainfalls that caused millions \u2014 or even billions \u2014 of dollars in property damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These cities are doing what they can within their borders to act on climate. But they are calling on the court to uphold the Clean Power Plan because it provides a framework that can drive needed carbon pollution reductions in a sensible, flexible, cost-effective manner. The Clean Power Plan will also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/cleanpowerplan\/fact-sheet-clean-power-plan-benefits-cleaner-more-efficient-power-sector\">preven<\/a>t an estimated <b>3,600 premature deaths<\/b> and <b>90,000 asthma attacks<\/b> annually once it is fully implemented.<\/p>\n<p><b>Twenty-seven<\/b> of the cities in the coalition supporting the Clean Power Plan are actually located in states with Attorneys General who are challenging the Clean Power Plan in court.
