This week I found some alarming new studies about carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) levels in the atmosphere and ocean.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Global CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions are accelerating, according to research published in the <i>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/i>. In their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/cgi\/reprint\/0700609104v1\">analysis [PDF]<\/a>, the researchers highlight three main points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Today&#8217;s emissions are higher than even the worst-case scenario considered in the IPCC&#8217;s projections of climate change,<\/li>\n<li>Emissions are growing most quickly in developing countries, particularly China, but<\/li>\n<li>The developed world (which has 20 percent of the population) is responsible for 59 percent of today&#8217;s CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions, and 77 percent of emissions since the 1750s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The oceans put a brake on global warming by removing half the extra CO<sub>2<\/sub> humans add to the atmosphere every year, but that might soon change. A paper to be published in <i>Science <\/i>(released online via <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/1136188v1\">Science Express<\/a><\/i>) found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher winds, possibly caused by ozone depletion and global warming, are churning up water that contains dissolved CO<sub>2<\/sub>, which is then released to the atmosphere, and<\/li>\n<li>Over the last 25 years, the ability of the Southern Ocean to remove CO<sub>2<\/sub> from the atmosphere has declined.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to know more these articles, please let me know!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In scanning the climate news each week, I come upon interesting items I&#8217;d like to share.
