{"id":10154,"date":"2015-05-01T14:14:37","date_gmt":"2015-05-01T19:14:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=10154"},"modified":"2015-05-01T14:30:57","modified_gmt":"2015-05-01T19:30:57","slug":"young-people-want-action-on-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2015\/05\/01\/young-people-want-action-on-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Young People Want Action on Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Ben Schneider, Director of Communications, Defend Our Future<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is a conclusion reached time and again, in survey after survey: Young people support climate action more than any other age group.<\/p>\n<p>That is a point worth reiterating given the recent findings <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2015\/04\/30\/poll-millennials-are-no-more-convinced-about-global-warming-than-their-parents\/?postshare=1271430398441031\">highlighted in a poll from Harvard\u2019s Institute of Politics<\/a>. Quite simply, that poll runs counter to many other polls that we have seen on this topic. Several polls over the last year, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/page\/2010-2019\/WashingtonPost\/2014\/06\/02\/National-Politics\/Polling\/question_14331.xml?uuid=Xg4D5Op3EeOxDlCQzztZWA\">one conducted by the Washington Post<\/a>, found that young people support climate action more than any other age group &#8211; with 80 percent support from 18-39 year olds, 71 percent from 40-64 year olds, and 55 percent from those 65 and older. A spread of 25 points between oldest and youngest sure seems like an age gap to me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The Post wasn\u2019t alone in their findings. Here are two other polls that reached similar conclusions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">From\u00a0an October 2014 poll by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracycorps.com\/Battleground-Surveys\/millennials-demand-action-on-climate-will-punish-qignorantq-politicians-who-deny-climate-change\/\">Democracy Corps and NextGen Climate<\/a>: &#8220;Two thirds of millennials view climate change as a serious threat that requires action now or in the years ahead, 14 points higher than non-millennials. And an overwhelming 3-to-1 ratio believe that the federal government should be doing more, not less, to address the problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Comparing Climate Change Attitudes of Millennials and non-Millennials<\/strong><strong><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10178\" style=\"width: 641px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracycorps.com\/Battleground-Surveys\/millennials-demand-action-on-climate-will-punish-qignorantq-politicians-who-deny-climate-change\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10178 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2015\/05\/NG-chart.jpg\" alt=\"NG chart\" width=\"641\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2015\/05\/NG-chart.jpg 641w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2015\/05\/NG-chart-300x146.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Democracy Corps and NextGen Climate October 2014 poll<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utexas.edu\/2014\/10\/28\/energy-poll\">Or take a look at this October 2014 poll from the University of Texas at Austin.<\/a> They found that 68 percent of voters under 35 said they were more likely to vote for candidates that support reducing carbon emissions and other actions that can help mitigate climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Comparing Under 35 and Over 65 on Climate and Environment Views<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2015\/05\/UT-chart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10179\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2015\/05\/UT-chart.jpg\" alt=\"UT chart\" width=\"611\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2015\/05\/UT-chart.jpg 611w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/7\/files\/2015\/05\/UT-chart-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 611px) 100vw, 611px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Polls like these, that show young people care about climate change and want to do something about it, are common. And it is easy to understand why: young people are seeing the earth warm as they come of age \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press\/2015\/january\/nasa-determines-2014-warmest-year-in-modern-record\">2014 was the hottest year in the modern record<\/a>, according to NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And they know the consequences of climate change will become more severe in the years and decades to come.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">We need to act on climate. Thankfully, young people agree.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> The data on Millennials are from on a survey of 1,000 respondents aged 18-34 in Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida (250 per state).
