Take Part in Earth Hour 2009!

What would the world look like without lights? For one hour, we'll have the chance to find out.

Switch off your lights this Saturday, March 28th, from 8:30 – 9:30 pm, and become part of a global movement against climate change.

EDF is proud to join tens of millions of people around the world who are taking part in Earth Hour — a global event led by the World Wildlife Fund.

Check out the video below to see how powerful just turning off your lights can be. Then, comment to let us know if you'll be participating!

If you need more information, please visit the Earth Hour site.

We'll be joining this year! Wouldn't it be great if everyone joined in! What a difference a day makes! I think the money we save will go into my Breast Cancer 3Day Walk fund! If anyone else would like to donate theirs please visit my page and make a tax free donation- http://www.the3day.org/goto/KarenHalgren

Going green is SO needed in order to save the earth for grands and great grands and theirs even! Unplugging things you don't use all the time- toasters, hair dryers, radios, TV, computer- these all use electricity even when shut off! We can all make a difference with the little things!

You people make excellent slaves. You are trained well. I have to let you in on a secret: Your lights being off will not help anything. Also, your lights being ON will not hurt anything. That's the truth. Now go ahead and spout off about how big of an energy waster I am.

Hi Ben,

We welcome your comments, even if we respectfully disagree. Whether you believe global warming is a serious threat to the planet (which would place you in agreement with nearly every scientific expert in the world — see http://climatecongress.ku.dk/newsroom/congress_key_messages/ for recent findings) or not, it's hard to understand why anyone would be against an admittedly symbolic step in support of energy conservation. If you really want to be for wasteful energy use, that's your decision. It's a free country.

Thanks for your views,
Sam Parry — Director, Online Membership and Activism

Turning off lamps might save a little bit of energy but why not turn off the televisions and computers too? It's too easy to watch TV for an hour and to have a romantic dinner by candlelight. (Remember to take care with candles.) Also keep in mind that the power will still be produced until we require less on a regular basis. Electricity does not store easily.

I think everyone should pray during that hour, pray for family, goverment, church, military, schools, who doesn't need prayer.Take it upon yourself for one hour of unselfish time, just think how dissappointed the devil will be we are not watching tv(awesome)!!!

I'm gonna do it this year. I did it last year, and although some people think that it won't make any kind of difference, maybe it won't, who knows. But if it won't help or hurt the planet, what's the harm in just doing it anyway.
The bottom line: If you wanna do it, do it. If you don't, don't.

I note the earlier comments, but even if we aren't reducing the country's energy consumption by shuting off lights, and also even with televisions, computers, etc.shut off, we are taking a symbolic act that may bring more people to think about or learn about what our science is telling us about where our consumption of non-renewable forms of energy is taking the ecology of earth.

Again, you are excellent slaves. Maybe you should stop acting like sheep and use that mass between your ears (that's your brain) for something useful like telling the New World Order/carbon-tax/climate change liars to die in a hole. Don't you see that they are training you to obey their orders? They make you think it's for a good cause so that you obey willingly. The truth is that it's just a carrot on a stick that you follow to any ends.

Head-in-the-sand self-righteous true believers:
You couldn't influence the earth's climate if you held your breath until you croaked. Might as well get on with your life. The earth as always will take its own course–no matter how HARD you believe!
A former "believer" along with you, I guess you can now spit at me and use epithets like "denier."
I did a whole lot of reading. I'm out.

Meaningful or symbolic, this is a great cause. For those who believe that global warming is a hoax perpetuated by aliens; “go get em boys”! I’d rather live in a clean fish tank than a dirty one any day. So, while non-believers are shoveling the soot out of their driveways, and hacking the carbon out of their lungs the rest of us will be breathing easy. I'm enjoying the warmer weather, but I'll be shutting of the lights! Let’s forget the debate on warming and focus on the clean fresh air!

I suggest that a much more beneficial action to be sponsored by ED staff and others would be to call on the distressed USPS to cut residential mail delivery to every other day. That would cut about 25% of its fuel costs, which are perhaps over $100 million/yr. and 25% of unneeded GHG emissions. This seems to me at least to be a no brainer with most people using e-mail or cell phones to correspond now. What do commentors here think as you would not have junk mail to separate every day then. USPS every other day would work for me – I only pick it up a couple times/week anyway: bills/ads always obediently waiting. I'd better not wait so long to mail back the few paid bills I can't do online! I think most folx would pitch a fit – kind of like when we tried to do away with pennies and issue $1 coins instead of $1 bills to save money…

I'm interested in a method to compute savings by household, by type of item turned off, (e.g., lights, TV, washer, dryer, dishwasher, et al), then by City.

It would show some interesting figures I'll bet.

Can you publish something like that? Thanks.

wonder if the effort can be seen in any satellite pics of the earth. would be interesting to compare it to another night as a measurement of participation.
re why to do it – it may not make an improvement tomorrow but if nothing else, it can be used as a measurement tool to demonstrate to the govt how people are ahead of govt and industry in their interest in change. entrpeneurs get cracking.

My husband and I will definitely be joining this year, opting to sit outside on our patio and light some candles and watch the nightfall roll in.

As for Ben up above, we are merely doing this to show our support for energy reform. We are not slaves, as you call us. However, I would like to point out a group of people who continue to deny something is real even in the face of scientific evidence showing the contrary; a group of people who, for no logical reason whatsoever (except perhaps they are lying and cheating the American citizens to continue to line their pockets) feel global warming is a hoax; a group of people who deny the inevitable, who feel all the pollution and carbon we are spewing into the atmosphere is harmless, a group of people who feel they have a right to rape, pillage, and plunder mother nature just to keep themselves comfortable while the utility companies rape, pillage, and plunder those people's wallets. I call that group "sheeple," because they blindly follow the herd and merely regurgitate whatever lies their leaders poison their brains with. You make a great drone, Ben.

Pursuant to my comment above about cutting USPS residential delivery to every other day, I should have added that some boosting of bulk mailing fees also needs to be done to cut the amount of junk mail. I suggest that regular mail order operations be allowed 16 mailings a year at regular bulk rates but more would have to pay the full regular rates. Also rates might be increased after a certain weight is mailed in a year. This would also reduce some trees being cut down to make the junk mail as well as cutting emissions. Many dept. stores send out with newspapers flyer as well as having ads in them so I wonder what value there is in sending out mail flyers as well. Not very many people, who get such ads by just mail flyers, are shoppers if they are not newspaper readers. Dr. J. Singmaster

I think it is a great and wonderful idea, and a step in the right direction as it gets millions of people from across the planet to move as "one" on an issue we all truly care about. It clearly shows the power of the people. I might suggest using this power as a "collective" to send a message to those that are keeping energy efficient technology that has existed for decades under wraps. For those that have seen the movie Zeigeist, you'll know that these criminals have long kept this technology under wraps simply because of greed, power and control. Thank you for all the good work your organization has done! I look forward to March 28th and I beleive we CAN make a difference, one person at a time!

I'm encouraging all my friends to participate. I think the idea is not only to turn off all the electrical gadgets you can for one hour, but to use that time to talk with each other about the larger issues of climate change. So in addition to a symbolic gesture, it is a "time-out" from our consumptive lives to stop, think, and raise awareness.

Come to think of it, doing this EVERY evening for an hour could be really life-changing for all of us!

Skepticism dies hard after years of deceit. Divided… we loose. I will make it a point as important as can be to turn lights off from 8:30 to 9:30 on Saturday. If just a glimpse of what can be accomplished by coming together, this is a valuable opportunity to find out. I am very thankful for this. Please leave behind the bitterness of past betrayals and join in on this.

Yes, I will be turning off all my lights and everything else tomorrow night. Candles are "in" and I liked the suggestion about praying for an hour. If Ben and Weatherdude would participate in this way, who knows what the great outcome might be? Thoughts are energy just as words are–set up this positive vibration to travel around the world! Our world needs all the divine help it can get! It's the hundredth monkey syndrome…if you and 99 other people do it, the wave will catch around the world and all will begin to do it! Man and the Earth need saving like never before! Yes, the world has always been guilty of egregious violence, but it is worse today because there are so many more people upon the planet. Pray for an hour–and turn out the electricity! Thanks for this powerful reminder!
