World Seeks U.S. Leadership on Global Warming

With President-elect Barack Obama ready to formally announce his energy and environment team next week, this week's international climate talks are winding down in Poznan, Poland.

One thing is clear: Obama's team has its work cut out to provide the global warming leadership the world seeks.

The U.S. has less than a year to show substantial progress on action to dramatically cut our global warming emissions before the next round of international climate talks begin in Copenhagen, Denmark.

What are your thoughts on the international climate negotiations and President-elect Obama's environmental team?

It's obvious that we need to look into sustainable energy and probably think of the way to fix the ozone layer, if thats possible.

Actions like reducing carbon footprint is really big help on the climate change but that doesn't change the fact that our ozone layer has a "hole", we might have to find some way to "repair" it to guarantee our earth is safe and not ruined by human's atc..

Thank you.

The book, "EARTH: The Sequel" should be required reading for all politicians and government workers. The cap and trade mechanism can focus natural market forces and make it profitable for innovators to revolutionize the way humans create and use energy in a sustainable way.

I believe that developing new technology that will bring down the cost of clean energy to below the cost of fossil fuels is critical to solving global warming. Once such technology is available, carbon taxes and caps will become unnecessary. I therefore suggest that international research and development projects combined with technology sharing be a major part of efforts to stop climate change.

My hope is that any proposed action by government will be constitutional, in that the rights of private property are strictly honored.
Our government obtains its just powers from the consent of us, the people, or "from the consent of the governed" as stated in The Declaration of Independence. Often, in the hysteria to create change, or to remedy some imagined catastrophe, we are apt to accept policy that infringes on the rights of the individual. We should avoid that at all costs. The ends do not justify the means.

Report: The Truth about Global Warming
In the future the only thing to eat will be other people
By: Willie J. McDonald
Non- Fiction
The world must listen to me! I’m an expert on the subject of global warming. The American governmental scientists are knowingly lying to the world about global warming. Telling the world green house gases are causing global warming, so the oil companies can continue to pump crude oil. The truth will cause a world wide economic collapse, but the alternative is far worse. The real reason for global warming is the earth’s orbit around the sun is decaying, in other words the earth is moving closer to the sun. I’ve studied this phenomenon since July-1983, warning people of the coming destruction, and death. People called me crazy at first. I understand the weather was normal at that time, now the weather is beginning to support my findings. December- 2007: Houston, Texas is experiencing warm sunny winters, a record high of 81degrees. Eventually Houston’s winters will completely disappear, as time goes on.
Houston is the perfect place to observe global warming, what’s occurring in Houston in winter will occur to the rest of the world. Houston’s winters are being replaced by warm sunny days, and that not normal for Houston, Texas. The sun is over the southern hemisphere now, and in the past the sun’s direct, and peripheral heat, and rays stayed within the southern hemisphere, away from the equator, and the outer edges of the polar ice caps. The sun is thousands of times larger, than earth. The earth has moved, so close to the sun that it’s peripheral rays, and heat has spread over the equator from the southern hemisphere to the southern part of the northern hemisphere, where Houston, Texas is located, and the sun’s peripheral heat, and rays has spread over the outer edges of the south pole, and is melting the ice. The same thing will occur, when the sun reaches the northern hemisphere. The peripheral heat and rays will spread over the equator, and heat the northern part of the southern hemisphere, and melt the ice on the outer edges of the North Pole, Just ask the governments of Greenland, Iceland, and the city of Alaska-USA about their melting ice packs. Talk to the people of Venice Italy about their rising ocean.
This trend will continue, until all the ice in both polar ice caps is melted, and until winter no longer exist in both hemispheres, back, and forth meling one polar ice cap at a time. The ice is melting faster in the summer months, faster than it can reform (build up ) in the winter months. There is enough ice in both polar ice caps to flood 95% of the existing land mass of this planet. The warmer the winters, the hotter the summers. The direct heat, and rays from the sun will intensify as the earth move closer, that’s the area of the earth the sun is stationed directly over. I grew up in Houston, Texas. I remember the hotter part of the day use to be 12:00 noon, now its 5:00 o’clock in the after noon. This is more evidence of earth’s orbit is decaying. December- 2007: The thunderstorms, and floods that occurred in the States of Oregon, And Washington State was suppose to by a snowstorm, after all its winter, but the atmosphere was too warm to support a snowstorm, so a thunderstorm was created instead, the flooding was extraordinary. January-2008 tornadoes touch down in the mid-west of America, causing death, and destruction in the millions of dollars. Febrary-2008 many tornadoes touched down, and killed dozens of people.
1 of 4

The only different between a snow storms, and a thunderstorms is the temperature of the upper atmosphere. The position of the sun to the earth determines the temperature of the upper atmosphere. This is the type of weather that will dominate in the future, floods, and tornados during the winter months, when these storms are not suppose to develop. The weather will go from one extreme to the other, from flooding to droughts in various parts of the United States, and the world. Food production will gradually come to a halt, because of the weather. As I said in the past global warming has nothing to do with C02 gases, R-12 gases, CFC gases, a hole in the ozone, the sun going nova, nor methane gases leaking from the ocean’s floor, as you will see in the future. Global warming will not be reverse by ridding the atmosphere of these gases.
Some of these gases have polluted the atmosphere since the industrial revolution in America, and Europe. In the early 20th century, before emission devices were installed on automobiles, and trucks the air in many cities was, so polluted it blotted out the sun, And cause breathing problems. There was no global temperature increase during this time period. Global warming is in its beginning stages, and will gradually get worse. It will not occur over night, and the winters will diminish gradually, over the decades. June-1978: I went to the mountains of Big Bear, California. As I looked down the city of Los Angles, California. The greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, trucks, and industrial activity was, so bad a very noticeable thick haze formed reducing visibility by 30%.There was no noticeable spike in temperature in Los Angeles, California, during that period. Carbon dioxide is poisonous to all mammals, including humans. If the levels of C02 gases are, so high why there haven’t been reports of carbon dioxide poisonings, such conditions require hospitalization.
The reason the earth is moving closer to the sun the molten core of the planet is cooling, because it’s not getting enough crude oil (fuel). The oil companies drill into an oil well to extract the crude oil. These oil wells are actually self- pressurizing fuel cells, and over time the crude oil extraction process used by the oil companies releases the pressures needed to force the oil into the outer core. All oil wells (self pressurizing fuel cells) must be capped off, and the pressure within them brought back to normal, so the crude oil can be forced into the outer core. This will raise the temperature in the core, and strengthen the earth’s magnetic field, and push the earth away from the sun. The higher the temperature in the core the stronger the earth’s magnetic field, and the cooler the temperature in the core, the weaker the earth’s magnetic field. The core is cooling, because it’s not getting the fuel (crude oil) it once did, before man discovered crude oil, and new uses for it. Everything that generates energy, or expends energy needs fuel, and the earth is no different from any other machine, People, and animals derive their energy from food, plants derive their energy from water, and sun light, automobiles from gasoline, thunderstorm, snowstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes derive their electrical energy, because these storms are electro- magnetic phenomenon. The earth, a machine generates a magnetic energy field from the inner core, and it is derived its energy from combustion of crude oil in its outer core.

2 of 4

This is a man made situation, not the will of God. People take the earth’s magnetic field for granted, because it’s invisible, and silent. The magnetic field holds people, object, and the oceans to the surface of earth. It keeps the air we breathe from escaping into space. It protects life on this planet from the harshness, vacuum, poisonous gases, and radiation of space. It protects life on the surface of this planet from sun flares, and it locks the earth in orbit around the sun, locks the moon in orbit around the earth, and keeps the earth at a safe distance from the sun, and moon. Contrary to popular belief the electro- magnetic energy in thunderstorms, winter storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes, etc. are not generated by sunspots, neither, sun flares, nor energy from deep space striking the earth’s magnetic field. The energy in these storms are generated by the earth magnetic field. The earth acts as a generator’s armature. The sun rotates the earth at one thousand miles per hour, the earth’s magnetic field brushes against the magnetic field of the surrounding universe. The electricity that’s generated is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere, and dispersed throughout the earth’s atmosphere, where it gathers water from the atmosphere, and form thunder storms, and from thunder storms into other weather phenomena, tornados, and hurricanes, etc. The electro- magnetic energy in a thunder storms can carry hundreds of million of gallon of water, and weigh hundreds of millions of metric tons. That’s just some of the things earth’s magnetic field does. The earth is a machine, a self-contained biosphere designed specifically for our life form.
These fuel cell (oil wells) can be re-pressurized by igniting the methane gases in them. In fuel cells thought to be empty, such as spindle top in Beaumont, Texas. It will be necessary to pump in a mixture of air, and methane gas, and ignite the mixture. The gas will expand, when ignited creating the necessary pressure to force the remaining oil into the core. These fuel cells extend for thousands of miles, from the upper crust down to the outer core of the planet, the oil companies can only drill less, than ten miles down. There are millions of gallons of crude oil remaining in these fuel cells, and they are located all around this planet for even heating of the core. Uneven heating of the core will result in a shift of the earth’s axes, and the earth has shifted on its axes by 15 degrees (As reported by NASA). Normalizing the flow of crude oil to the core will increase the temperature in the outer core, and the outer core heats the inner core, which generates the earth’s magnetic field. If left alone the temperature in the outer core will stabilize. This is the only way to save all life on this planet. The evidence that large quantities of crude oil are combusted, and sustain the high temperatures in the core, every conceivable by-product of crude oil is ejected from volcanoes all around this planet, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide, etc.
The materials ejected from volcanoes originate from the outer core. There is a point of no return, because it will take decades to reheat the core back to normal temperatures. Volcanoes are the means by which the outer core rids itself of spent fuel, and volcanoes regulate the pressures in the outer core, volcanoes extends from the surface of the planet down to the outer core. Volcanic eruptions in the past occurred more frequently, and they occurred in various parts around the planet, and were much more powerful, than volcanic eruptions in present days. This is more evidence the core is cooling.

3 of 4
The higher the temperature in the core, the more frequent, the more wide spread, and the more powerful the eruptions. The cooler the temperature in the core, the less frequent, and the less violent, and the less wide spread the eruptions will occur. Many volcanoes are lying dormant, and haven’t erupted in many decades.
Crude oil is capable of generating temperatures found in the core, after all crude oil is a hydro- carbon, and hydro-carbons are used to melt, and manufacture steel There are three types of hydro- carbons, crude oil- a liquid, methane- a gas, and coal- a solid. The tremendous pressures ejected from volcanoes are due to the combustion of crude oil in the outer core The gases in all hydrocarbons expand, when ignited, and will create pressure in an enclosed vessel, such as the core of this planet. There are two different diagnoses, but only one right solution. Please don’t close your mind to my findings.
My solution is the only correct one. The leading scientists are wrong about everything, cleaning the air will not reverse global warming. Please keep an open mind. If we choose the wrong solution we will leave our grandchildren and great grandchildren a future that doesn’t exist, It will be a hellish existence. In the future the weather will be, so harsh it will be very difficult to grow plants, and to raise farm animals, what I’m trying to say is in the future the only thing left to eat will be other people. The leading scientist will think of another excuse for global warming, when they realize they are wrong, and their plans are not working. Please don’t let them do that, time is running out! If the earth past the point of no return, or if the core temperature drops below the flash point of crude oil, all is lost. Don’t focus on the fluctuation in temperature from year to year, focus on the weather trends, and the trends are its getting hotter, and the ice in both poles are melting. Global warming is in its beginning stages.

A cap-and-trade program is the wrong policy. Our politicians will take years to agree on which industries and which companies will get allowances and caps. Europe adopted this with disastrous results . EU emssions have risen in 2006 and again in 2007.
We should hold out for a carbon tax.

Yes, and we must hurry hurry hurry!!!!
We can still minimize the worst effects of climate change with a muli-pronged GENUINE EFFORT by our government and citizens.
We can also salvage the US's reputation as scapegoat and sandbagger if we swing into action with full vigor starting this year. We can ensure a better future!!! And this pulls everyone together. :)

Legislation worldwide is needed urgently to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, all of which are running out after over a century of exploitation.
The lifestyles to which we have become used since the beginning of the last century in the West are not sustainable in the long term. Our freedom to enjoy a high standard of living in Europe and USA has been bought at the expense of the poor throughout the world.
We need to use today's and future technology to reduce our wastage of resources and energy. Governments can assist some of these changes by legislation and imposing taxes on wasteful uses of energy and resources. These taxes can be used in various ways to encourage new energy sources, assist us to reduce our energy consumption and reduce unnecessary travel.
People need to live near to work and other facilities. We need to spend our daily lives within a smaller neighbourhood, grow our own food if possible and buy locally as much as possible. Local communities will this again be created that will foster less crime and waste with less need for policing.
Our houses need to be built, altered or improved so that the minimum of outside energy is needed to heat and cool them. Heat-pumps solar and wind llinked to an electrical grids should suffice for our household energy needs.
Solar furnaces, wind power and wave and tidal power can add to the existing hydro-electric power, thus eventually eliminating use of carbon fuels on the present massive scale. If this is done, the existing fuels may last several centuries. If it is not, we will run our of oil, gas etc. within a century.
Water is being use too quickly worldwide and ground level water is becoming lower and lower. We need to use less water and stop using it for wasteful pirposes.
Our food needs to be based on whole plant foods. The eating of animals, which use ten times the energy, water and resources required by grains and beans, for example, not only costs too much, but causes most of the diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart attacks in the West.
By changing our food intake, we will, firstly, improve our health, save medical costs, live longer and feel better. Research over 40 years confirms all these facts.
Instead of wasting over $1 trillion on armaments, armed forced, except perhaps for a small self-defence force, need to be under the umbrella of the United Nations ready to reaact to emergencies like tsunamis and earthquakes worldwide. Most of the personnel in the present armed forces can use their skills and trades in their own countries or those of the third world to assist in the tapping of water resources for the 1 billion people who have no access to it. Sanitation and hygeine education needs to reach a furthder 2 billion and these personnel could be easily trained to do this.
The third world needs simple cheap technology like mosquito nets, solar ovens, solar and wind generators, so that people no longer have to live in one hut with a whole family with the smoke and flames from a fire ruining their lungs and health.
No longer can Europe live at a rate that needs 3 earths, or the USA at a rate that needs 5 earths. Laws and gudance, supported by secular education, needs to enforce these changes if necessary. 2000 years of Christianity and year from the other religions seem to have done little in this direction, so now may be the time for science and intelligence need to take over our thinking to alter the here and now, and perhaps ignore imaginary gods and future lives, aliens or other such beliefs.

One of those ways are to reduce the use of paper by schools.

We are doing just that. 1 no effect 1 billion awesome and the earth can start to breathe.

Barak Obama will have his work cut out to avoid catastrophic climate change and will have to be tons better than the current oil gangster regime. He will be under intense pressure from all sorts of interests who think it's better to postpone action, e.g. the car manufacturers right now. He will also be under pressure from groups demanding action on climate change.

There is evidence that in the last 4-5 years the Earth has been cooling slightly, not warming. In any case, whether warming or cooling, human activities have nothing to do with it. The current warming hysteria is caused by politicians' lust for more money and power, news media's need for ever more sensational stories, and the general public's urge to be part of something larger than themselves. I suggest that you not be stampeded by wild apocalyptic predictions. You're not sheep; don't act like one.

All these fools! We need to take no action on global warming. Those who want to HURRY HURRY HURRY, don't want people to find out what they know. That global warming and cooling are normal earth cycles. There is no danger. Think of it on a smaller scale. Let's say, a thunder storm is caused by whatever. We must do something before the storm destroys the planet and all life on it. If this was the first time we had experienced a thunderstorm, we might feel the urgency. So we make some sacrifice to asuage the thunder gods, and slowly, the storm goes away. Then the alarmists say that the sacrifice saved the earth. Next storm, more sacrifice required. However, if we had done nothing, we would see that the storm went away without our ineffective help. Thus it is the same with global warming. Ldet's do nothing, as we have done since the dawn of the industrial age, and look, see, the earth is already cooling!

My view is that the "global warming phenomena is not a theory as before.. its real.

In my country(PAPUA NEW GUINEA, I can really fell and see the effect of global warming….chnage in climatic pattern, hot in the highlands…. cold in the coastal areas where not experinced a decade ago.

Therfore International Climatic Negotiations should come up to an agreement that all governemnt should start initiating global warming reduction practices at the local level.

President-elect Abama's environment team must advice the president to push forward for global reduction policies, strategies or initiatives.

We all (developing and Developed countries) must act to save our own life and our own future generation by doing somthing now while taking into consideration of environemnt and economic sustainability

I really hope Obama takes this issue very seriously. In my mind, there is no reason we should still be using Oil and Fossil Fuels in this day and age when we've known for decades its causing major increases in things like asthma, acid rain, skin cancer, and a dependence on Foreign Oil, not to mention the pollution that causes Climate Change.

I wanted to write a song about Global Warming and our dependence on oil and fossil fuels without being too political or one-sided in my effort. I wanted to explain that humans have a choice, we hold the key to the shape of things to come. And we ALL will be effected by our choices.

I want to do something to help spread awareness about these issues, and through the universal language of music, I hope I can help move people to action in their daily lives and also move them to demand that our governments urgently implement laws that would slow or possibly even halt Global Warming.

Below is a link to my song "GRIP OF THE BLACK GOLD" with lyrics (free streaming).

I've also included the lyrics at the bottom of this Comment.

Lyrics to "Grip of the Black Gold" Words & Music ©2006 Steve Blexrud/Blex Music

There is a silence all around
and there's a hotter sun that's rising.
And in the nature of it all,
there's dollar bills and politics disguising.

The science told us what we'd see,
if we changed the world by one degree.
Now there is turbulence aloft,
another storm heads for the mainland.

One day in a new world, they just might understand,
our outrage at the ignorance we cast upon the land.
They said "to change would cost too much,
so drill another hole". We're living at the mercy of our
grip of the black gold.

This is our only time and place,
we can't seem to slow our blinding pace.
But distant smoke begins to drift,
and glacial ice begins to shift.

One day in a new world, they just might understand,
our outrage at the ignorance we cast upon the land.
They said "to change would cost too much,
so drill another hole". We're living at the mercy of our
grip of the black gold.

Do we want to change, do we want to listen,
now that we find ourselves in this position?
Or endure the hold, of the black gold.

One day in a new world, they just might understand,
our outrage at the ignorance we cast upon the land.
They said "to change would cost too much",
and so the story goes. We're living at the mercy of our
grip of the black gold.

To the Quadfather and Barry E. Lerner,

Quadfather – Global Warming is not the same as a thunderstorm, and applying this argument does not make sense.

Barry – The Earth is not cooling. Since pre-industrial times, global average temperatures have increased by about 0.7ºC, with about half of the warming occurring over the past few decades.

And now, for both of you – it is not just a natural cycle, and humans are causing global warming. Natural processes emit large quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere, but they also remove it—at nearly identical rates. This balance maintained the concentration of CO2 at a stable level for thousands of years prior to the Industrial Revolution. In the case of global warming, the question is: What is causing the increase in CO2 concentrations? The answer turns out to be incontrovertible. The isotopic composition of carbon in atmospheric CO2 provides a unique "fingerprint” that tells scientists that the lion’s share of the additional CO2 accumulating in the atmosphere is from the burning of fossil fuels.

Thanks, and I hope this sheds some light on the issue for you.

I just joined ENSO Bottles. They manufacture/sell plastic bottles. When I told one of my friends about ENSO his response was…."Whats the matter with you, we don't need any plastic bottles….at least not any more." I couldn't agree more, we don't need any more traditional PET plastic entering the waste stream, we need to do something new. That's why I think ENSO is a positive step in the right direction. It's not the end all answer but it will help. ENSO is making PET plastic bottles that (1) Biodegrade, (2) Compost, and (3) Recycle. Do they do any of the above perfectly? No, but they are way better than what we have now. The president of ENSO, Danny Clark has a vision of making more earth friendly products that once they have run their usefulness can be turned into something valuable….dirt. The answer isn't to go back to the stone ages but to start using "good" science to make smater products. If kya don't get it yet then I'd recommend reading "Cradle to Cradle"…good book, interesting ideas.

We need a solution that everyone can get behind. We need a solution that begins Jan 20th. We need ECONOMY/ECOLOGY BONDS.

These BONDS must be so attractive, EVERYONE will buy them. That money collected will be loaned to comapanies that build jobs for the greatest number of people first. Such as a M.R.F.(Material Recovery Facility) As people are employed, they will buy more bonds and more consumables. As these MRFs provide raw material, more businesses can grow from them.

Until we face the basic fact that we already have a 35% and growing overload of GHGs, mostly carbon dioxide, all actions being proposed be it for carbon taxes, for cap and trade, for more energy efficient vehicles and lights, for biofuels, for solar collectors, etc. will do nothing to remove one molecule of that gas on balance from the atmosphere. All those actions and even energy from hydrogen will just be slowing the adding of more GHGs, but do not bring any carbon footprint reduction.
Only two ways can actually take some of that carbon overload from the atmosphere. One involves sucking air through some carbon dioxide trapping system to get it concentrated to bury perhaps. But the costs are going to be enormous, and test runs have not been very successful.
The other way has two routes taking advantage of nature that traps carbon dioxide in plants as we can use a pyrolysis process to make charcoal; Remaking inert coal essentially. Right now, as I have mentioned in several Green Room postings, we have looming environmental messes with our present handling of organic wastes and sewage. Besides the obvious problem of germs, toxics and drugs escaping from those wastes, they, being natural biochemicals, get biodegraded to be releasing GHGs needlessly. I have outlined briefly the benefits of using pyrolysis on those messes in recent Green Room postings and have sent a more detailed description on using pyrolysis to many ED Staff.
Heather Shelby: You have responded to some comments by others but do not seem to have any concerning what I have commented. Does that mean ED doesn't understand what I have been sending? Perhaps some ED Staff should go check dumps and find how much of mess they are and the cost for maintaining them to keep the hazards in them from escaping. With pyrolysis destroying the germs, drugs and most toxics((Some may need to be trapped in the hot distillate) pollution would be stopped as well as the reemitting of GHGs. Can't someone concerned about hazard escapes at ED wake up to getting action on the ever-expanding messes of organic wastes and sewage before a massive escape takes a toll on people and the environment.

for protect our planet we must guard the following
1)Decrease the temperature at home by 1Celsius and turn off the lights whenever you dont need them.
2)Dont leave your TV,computer or stereo in a stand-by mode but switch them off when you dont use them
3)You change your light bulbs into energy-saving bulbs
4) You change your electricity into one that uses renewable resources.
5)Use products that have as little packaging as possible.6)Use public transport and walk or bicycle instead of driving a car.
7)Sort your waste and recycle whenever possible
8)Favour environmentally labbelled products
9)Dont waste in vain _Prefer to fix and repair rather than buy new
These are my list of pledge -please dont foget it

Well, at least this site lets us "deniers" post our refutals of the "Climate Change Myths". That's a nice change from the one way propaganda the uninformed alarmists usually participate in.

Someone explain to me how we got into and out of several ice ages if the globe doesn't NATURALLY cycle from warmer to cooler periods and back again. All before mankind had any industrial base and mostly before man even existed. It's as plain as the nose on your face. Don't buy into the alarmism and the urgency they promote.

Just like the OZONE LAYER, Y2K, ACID RAIN they claim we're all gonna die and something must be done!!!Didn't Ted Danson ( the brilliant Scientist) tell us it would all be lost if we didn't do something about the oceans in the next 10 years? That's a 1987 quote. ( I think it's been more than 10 years!?!) The actors are all fools who want to be taken seriously, and since they talk a lot and don't really understand simple concepts they make great spokepeople for this crap.

Their is no funding for a study on why puppies are so cute!! So all the overeducated idiots need a new hysteria every few years to get their funding.

Why does the solution to every made up problem always involve a tax? (cap and trade)Mull that over a while.

The largest contributor to GH effect is water vapor, but it's never mentioned, because you can't control much of it and you can't create much hysteria with "water vapor if frying the earth…! So it's never mentioned. Man contributes .0017% to the GHG inventory by the most agressive accounts. It's like peeing in the ocean. probably not going to see much effect.

Also, why can't they produce todays situation with their computer models and 1910- today reconstruction? Because computer models can't formulate and reproduce BULLSHIT!

The teachers and students in our school have been working on some Environmental projects this year. We wanted to inform you about these projects; perhaps in the future we can collaborate on new work.

First, over the summer I became interested in Environmental volunteer projects from the International Education Resource Network (iearn.org). I found connections to other organizations that created and implemented projects that concern Environment. One of these organizations is called Environment Online (ENO). This organization created a “Tree Planting Day” celebrating The International Day of Peace on September 22, 2008. I invited our students and teachers to plant saplings in our schoolyard in collaboration with ENO’s “Tree Planting Day.” We successfully participated in this project.

Next, ENO created a new project called “Climate Change Pledges.” In this project, I asked sixth form students to create pledges for community members. These pledges asked that we protect our environment by changing our actions. For example, one pledge reads, “I eat local food and less meat.” Sixth form students working in pairs asked teachers, older students, parents and other community members to sign their names after their pledge. In January, there will be a ceremony showing all the pledges and signatures. We will award the students with the most signatures; we will also post our work on ENO’s website.

Finally, we are beginning a project with Volvo Adventure. We are creating a project ourselves to post in the Volvo Adventure contest. Me and four students will begin to write a project proposal to all the ministries in Ismayilli Region. We would like to complete the Intellectual House for our region. At this time, the Intellectual House is incomplete and used for very bad things; we would like to clean this area, protect the environment around it and create a place for education. We hope this project will work.

We have been working very much on projects in our school; some of them have been about Environment, but many are about other subjects. We are a very active school, and we wanted to inform you of our work.

Sincerely,
Yegana Mitalova

JGar,

I just wanted to post a few counterpoints to what you presented.

1) Those who want to stop global warming are not arguing that there is no natural warming and cooling cycle. As I stated in a previous comment, natural processes emit CO2 into the atmosphere, but also remove it at nearly identical rates. However, humans have been disturbing this balance since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. We began to emit more carbon into the air, through the burning of fossil fuels, and also prevent it from being removed by increasing deforestation. Clearly, this pushes the cycle off track, and has led to global warming.

2) As for the dangers of the ozone layer, Y2K, and acid rain, all of these were valid fears. Yet with each of them, measures were put in place to pull us back from disaster. To protect the ozone layer, we stopped producing CFC's. With the Y2K problem, there was a massive overhaul in computer systems across the world to change them from 2-digit systems to 4-digit systems so that when the clock rolled to '00, computers wouldn't read them as 1900. With acid rain, a cap and trade system was put into place, chemicals were reduced, and the problem was solved. So to use your own argument, we do need preventative measures in order to stop this just as these other near-disasters were stopped.

3) Cap and trade is not a tax. Rather, it is a system of rewarding good behavior. Our cap and trade policy can be explained in better detail here: http://www.edf.org/page.cfm?tagid=22819&redirect=capandtrade

4) Water vapor is a naturally occurring greenhouse gas, and does account for a large percentage of the greenhouse effect. However, according to the Clausius-Clapeyron relation, this is because air can hold more water vapor per unit as it warms. Current state-of-the-art climate models predict that increasing water vapor concentrations in warmer air will amplify the greenhouse effect created by man-made greenhouse gases while maintaining nearly constant relative humidity. Thus water vapor acts as a positive feedback to the forcing provided by greenhouse gases such as CO2, and decreasing these will decrease the effects of water vapor.

I hope this helps you understand our side of the argument a bit better.

Heather and others at ED; Why won't you understand the bigger picture on global warming and beyond and the role of the ever-expanding messes of organic wastes and sewage as emerging environmental crises? That report from Duke that ED gave some hype to talks of doing something to stop hog wastes from being a contributor to emissions. Won't human excreta and food wastes being doing much more of the same?
I hope that some ED members will start asking why ED is wasting their money on somewhat insubstantial programs of protecting endangered species that will be gone if we do not get control of those messes. I have sent many at ED and posted here that those messes are a resource to get control of several crises as they can be stopped by using pyrolysis from reemitting GHGs and from having hazards getting away from dumps to pollute water supplies. Doesn't the fact that EPA is holding this month a conference on risks of drugs in drinking water tell ED members that we have to get control of those messes? Dr. J. Singmaster

Dr. J. Singmaster,

We do work on these issues as well. We have an entire team devoted to cutting down chemicals. There are many different facets of environmental issues, and we do our best to cover each one. However, our main issue is and will remain global warming.

Heather: Hog wastes are a concern ii seems with the write up about the CGGC report by Gereffi's group. What about human wastes that I have pointed out get handled to be reemitting GHGs needlessly? Aren't those massive messes of organic wastes and sewage going to be giving off many times the GHGs of the hog wastes? Why can't ED espanded its view as it is fooling its members pennyante actions on global warming. Nothing ED proposes will remove one molecule of carbon dioxide on balance from the 35% and growing overload of GHGs. Reducing emissions does not remove CO2 molecules, it just slows the adding of more to the overload. All the biofuelishness concepts at best just recycle the present level of that gas. It is pathetic that no one at ED seems to recognize the lack of actual carbon removal in its proposals as we may soon become an endangered species due to being locked into continuing shortsightedness of just controlling emissions. In response to Barry E Lerner, I almost agree entirely. We can sit around and argue the details and causes of Global Warming for years but the point is there is something wrong with the condition of our enviornment. And we can't sit around and take the government's lies and propaganda. And we can't ignore it because we feel hopeless.
