It is easy enough to "sacrifice" for this cause — which is to say, our future — since a $25 donation is nothing more than a pair of movie tickets or dinner for two at the corner diner. Do yourself and the planet a favor: skip the movie, eat at home.

Comment from Cheri (Jeffersonton, VA)

'Tis the season for giving! "Global Warming" is too important to ignore. Giving even a small amount is better than no amount at all! Increasing donors will only help the cause. Everything has a price tag, but this is invaluable! Think about it… there's just no excuse not to donate!

I am on board with Environmental Defense because I am concerned about my young daughter's future, and because, as a religious leader and person of faith, I can think of no greater sacred responsibility than protecting the future of life on earth. I still meet people who don't believe Global Warming is taking place! Now I ask you how can you ignore the fact that an area of ice five times the size of California has already melted from the polar ice cap, and polar bears are eating their young to stay alive??

Global Warming is an issue that needs to be addressed NOW. It certainly cannot be passed to the next generation (because it will then be too late). We owe it to them (and future generations), the innocent people in Third World countries that will mostly be affected if things do not change, and the animal and plant species that have no say our action. All of us should have the ability to look ourselves in the mirror and say, "I am doing all I can" and not flinch. I know I'm not, and you can say the same too if you join this campaign!

Environmental Defense has made me feel encouraged because I am not alone in hoping for this planet (and universe). It and the NRDC are both achieving–and have achieved–what individuals without organization cannot. They act and they cause improvement–educationally, environmentally, and with the spirit of goodness and intent of helpfulness for the present and the future: for me and my husband, our kids and their kids, and theirs…

It is our responsibility to do everything we can to save our environment. I always think of the Iroquois proverb, "In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." What are we leaving behind for our children?

Climate degradation is THE classic example of the economic phenonmena known as "externalities"; that is, costs which are borne by all, but which harm the individual who takes the first step to correct. The Clean Air Act and the protocal to eliminate cvc's are shining examples of how government action is the only way to work for the good of ALL. Now is the time to push our government to do what must be done, to reverse the trends of the past generation. Hats off to Evironmental Defense for providing such strong and reasonable leadership.

Comment from Michael, Huntington Beach CA

Comment from Rod Ruoff
December 7th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Global warming, habitat destruction, we are living at odds with the natural environment. We all must use much less. The idea that we can "grow" ourselves out of this is a bit bizarre–conservation is critical along with rapid transition to alternative energies. In the USA, a 1 cent per month tax on gasoline per month, in perpetuity, would generate about $10B per year for accelerating transition to alternative energy. (~160B gallons/yr gasoline…thus 1.6B * 6 = about $10B per year).

Stopping major power companies from building huge coal-fired power plants is a good step in the right direction, to reduce carbon dioxide gases in our atmosphere. When you consider that all life on earth including human depends on a stable and healthy environment, participating in making it stay that way is not only the right thing to do, it makes alot of sense too. What inspired me to donate to this organization in particular is the fact that though each concerned citizen can do their best to reduce consumption, reuse what you already have, and recycle whatever can be kept out of the landfill, etc., it is essential that the larger scale operations, companies, governments, etc. be reigned in as well; legally.

Please, if you have children or grandchildren, don't let your legacy be one of a planet filled with starvation. That's right not only will the national parks and wild places fall barren and silent, global warming will create worldwide starvation on a scale never imagined…please let your voice be heard by donating…not matter how little you can afford, it will matter to current and future generations.

From updates recently received from the Climate Conference in Bali, it appears that parts of the international community are seriously addressing global warming and the damage to the environment. The United States needs to take a leading role in taking the necessary steps to reduce the impact of greenhouses gases, not only to deal with out polluting behavior, but also to convince large polluting states such as China and India to follow our behavior to protect the environment from irreversible damage. I hope others are persuaded to take similar action to support this important campaign.

The work of this organization gives me hope that we can truly overcome the serious environmental issues facing our planet. We can never give up hope and EDF helps us remember that. In 2007 I personally witnessed the fire devistation in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota, in the Peloponese region of Greece and in Southern California. I was in Washington D.C. when a campaigner for Environmental Defense introduced me to the organisation and its work. I've been a supporter ever since; and no, I'm not an American citizen. I support ED because what happens in the USA happens to the rest of the world. And we all desperately need the best of America after 7 years of dangerous misrule.

As an early Christmas from my 16 year old daughter I received the complete serie of Planet Earth. I started with the CD entitled: The Future of our planet. Although the images are incredibly beautiful and you would think that we are OK from just looking; all the information delivered by concerns conservatits, environmentalists and the cameramen who traveled the planet to bring this incredible documentary to us, was very alarming. I knew that but the information combined with the picture of our beloved Mother Earth and all the species that render a service to Her and to us, I did not want to just look any longer without doing something other than recycling in my home. Please, make a difference that will really bring fruits and donate the price of a week's latte or a pedicure and you will feel absolutly wonderful! Happy Holidays!

When I first knew the details of what the devastating consequences of global warming could be, I flipped emotionally and wrote to the White House who forwarded my note to the KS Senator Sam Brownback and our representative, Dennis Moore. I received a reply from both of them over this Thanksgiving! Not long after I wrote to the White House, I searched for a global warming campaign to join and discovered the EDAF. I am very grateful for them and am a proud member. I always encourage my family and friends to take part in the EDAF petitions and share the EDAF breakthrough news because global warming is as important to me as the EDAF and I like to encourage others to get involved and help fight to keep our planet habitable.

We have long been supporters of Environmental Defense, but since we had sent a check 2 months ago, I would not have donated again, except that I had just read about the tremendous work you did at the Bali Conference, through the blogs written by Peter Goldmark. Reading your comments gives me hope that not all is lost. I love humanity and know we are capable of wonderous acts of love but, I feel we have taken a passive role in acting out against what we know is unhealthy for ourselves and the planet. I feel as long as our comforts are plentiful we are happy to let time pass. I'm always amazed at how little we actually "need" to live a full life. I hope 2008 will be the year we experience remarkable breakthrough's in the consciousness of our species to live more simply and to work together towards living in harmony with gaia. I would like to share this quote by Wendell Berry:
"Our children no longer learn how to read the great book of Nature from their own direct experience or how to interact creatively with the seasonal tranformations of the planet. They seldom learn where their water comes from or where it goes. We no longer coordinate our human celebration with the great liturgy of the heavens."

I think of EDF as a real power in addressing the environmental problems we face. They're not afraid to take
on big offenders and in so doing give the polluters "no place to hide." Their education programs combined with positive action can give us all a bit more hope that we WILL have a world for our kids! Join! Contribute! Help EDF help the world.

I felt it was ridiculous how global warming has become a political issue. I read that there are large companies funding the campaign against global warming and although my contribution is small, I feel I have to do something. I know if many more people do the same we can help your campaign tell people the truth about global warming. I know this organization is for real and that 10 years from now we won't see some type of scandal revealed with our hard earned donations. I LOVE Polar Bears and it puts a pit in my stomach to see them suffering and to see that 386,000 SQUARE miles of Artic Ice has melted in the past 12 months alone….mostly due to the self-serving antics of mankind. I am determined to be a part of the solution and every time I flip off a light switch (I even go around at work and turn off things every day) I visualize the restful "smiles" of a Polar Bear and its cub having the ability to live without threat. This here is the core of my motivation to take action, lobby and educate others on the matter that matters most: our survival on planet earth as we know it.

Oh Goodness, whatever we can do right now we should do it to help with reducing Global Warming. I offer a home base business to everyone who drives any type vehicle and wants to reduce it's emissions by at least 30%! We get our food from the local stores and our mail from emission producing vehicles so everyone drives or lives a lifestyle that requires vehicles to support us. In this business I spoke of we have the legionary Al Uncer Racing Family endorsing and supporting our Global Warming emissions reducing product and will be driving the (NOW "GO GREEN" COLOR)Indy 500 race care with OUR Logo all over it. Al Uncer Jr. will be at every race his son Al Uncer III (the third) is driving starting this year's racing tour around the United States and once in Japan! What a GREAT way to advertise YOUR business and to have YOUR product in front MILLIONS of people in 16 different races around the country and world while promoting the reduction of Global Warming. Oh, one more thing, it increases you mileage by 7-19% too! That means, you are saving more money in fuel than the cost of the product. That means you are cleaning the environment for FREE. You can find out more at my site at http://www.RsqRAir.com (stands for Rescue Our Air). This is real, this works every time we just have to use it in our Cars, Trucks, Boats, well let me put it this way, "If it has a combustible engine, it will work" even your engine powered weed eater!! You gotta see this GREEN CAR!!! This will inspire millions around the world and you can be a part of it. Join now with the Gold membership and receive a free ($500.00) fuel voucher for about the same cost as your Gold membership until Dec. 31, 2007 then get yourself ready for an explosion of YOUR business when these races start in March (just 2+ months away!!!). You can do this as a way of life in addition to your normal daily employment and lives. Just hand everyone your card when the conversations you are having with them goes to "the cost of fuel" or to " endangered animals" to the "melting polar ice" to Global Warming itself". This gives everyone a way to actually do something first hand about Global Warming in addition to supporting Environmental Defense and their efforts of finding solutions to rescue our environment from the causes and effects of Global Warming. Thank you for being here. Again it is http://www.RsqRAir.com , come take a spin in this exciting way to reducing OUR emissions and Global Warming.

If not now when do you make a stand for our world. EDA has always been my eyes in the storm. They make a significant difference in protecting what God has given us. This cannot be done if we stick our heads in the sand. Someone has to be on top of these issues and that action cannot be done without funding. With Tax time just ahead this deduction always makes it easier, but now knowing that my funds will be matched just excites the heck out of me. It makes great sense to act before the end of the year. In a way it is like a gift to yourself.
May God Bless you one and all for your help and support of this great planet we call earth. And thank you Fred Krupp for having it all together for us to help do that.

I hope that never changes, but by donating you can help research and fight global warming, because our government is not focused on this issue and we need to get their attention. They are not making this problem any better so it is almost all up to us to grab their attention even more to focus on this global issue that people claim not to be a big issue which is very dissapointing because i think this is a big issue and that people need to understand the serious affects that it is putting on our earth. Our future depends on taking immediate action and eliminating global warming. If we aren't successful, everything from wildlife to plantlife to humanity will be ruined. We need to be good stewards of the earth. Comfortable living and responsible living are completely manageable. We need to head in that direction and begin changing now, and educating everyone about the immediate need.

I feel sometimes we say things and it only falls on deaf ears. But all my life I have felt that every animal and every plant and every minreal is here for a reason. Perhaps a reason on a grander scale than any of us can imagine. They might be here to save the world one day from a dis. or some catastrify. So something should be done to save the creatures of the world and the plants and the polar caps. But the only way to do this is to gather together and let our voices be heard.

We have to write our politicians from the state all the way up to the president, most seem to be working for their own selfish interests. The president should stop pushing ethanol based on anything other than ag waste for 3 resaons: 1. Corn based ethanol has increased the cost of many foods we buy 2. It takes nearly as much energy to produce as one receives using it 3. It costs more to buy than gasoline & one's mileage is reduced by 25-35%. They should invest in other forms of energy: 1. Increase solar & wind generating credits 2. Increase tax credits for low emission hi-mileage & zero emission new cars to absorb the entire extra purchase cost 3. Require 5% of all new vehicles sold each year to be low emission hi-milage & an additional 5% of those sold to be zero emission.
It is possible to produce cars that meet the above requirements by using engines that run on clean diesel, natural gas, and there are even engines that may use ethanol and without incuring the mileage penalty. The only infrastructure available for zero emission vehicles is electrical & the current battery technology can deliver 100-300 miles of travel with only electrical power. Since the majority of our citizens drive less than 40 miles on average daily a 2-4 passenger vehicle would make a nice commuter auto. Those who do drive over the norm and for taking trips one would have to use a clean fuel or hybrid vehicle.

We can do this together, but only together. I was taught at a young age to respect and appreciate our environment so it is easy for me to add my voice to this cause. Global warming and Climate Change is the greatest single threat to all living things that we have ever faced both collectively and communally. It is important that the "World Community" join together and work to stabilize the climate and protect our Mother Earth and all of her inhabitants. Animals do not have a choice. They have to live with the decisions that we as humans make. We have all been over consumers of our natural resources, and have created a disposable environment. The animals have all paid a serious price worldwide for our wasteful attitudes. We as stewards of our environment need to change our wasteful attitudes and lifestyles and restore the health of our ailing planet. It is our primary responsibility to protect our Mother Earth for the future of all living things. I am confident that we will all join together and heal our sick planet.

Obviously, this mine is only of commercial interest to the company and if built can contaminate the air and water supply of 350,000 residents in the area. Many times taxpayers are often left with the monetary cost of cleaning up a toxic waste site such as the one proposed. Being proactive is the only way we can defeat this!

I am very concerned about the pseudoscience articles being fed to doctors and other professionals through their journals that "prove" global warming does not exist. They appear to have been written by credible scientists until you look at the credits. The reviews are all by people outside the fields tehy are supposed to represent and the articles are published in non environmental journals. Thank you for carrying on the real work and how can we stop this nonsensical information spread that is coopting good professionals from our cause?

I am tired of feeling helpless and hopeless in the face of the corporate juggernaut — even though retired, I like feeling that there IS something I can do, however small, and that is contribute some money to help an organization such as this. I hope others — a LOT of others — will do the same.

Dear EDF people:

I wish EDF could add a concern to its agenda. Something big is happening regarding the final closing down and decommissioning of our nuclear reactors.
It seems appropriate for EDF insofar as you are concerned with protection of the environment. This is big. It is environment.

The person to get good information from is Sally Shaw,
acer8sac@comcast.net
She is with a citizen action group working to close down the reactor called ENVY (Entergy Vermont Yankee). To start with, ask for her recent email headlined, "Fission Accomplished."

At one point, Dave McElwee, ENVY's state liaison engineer, asserted that Entergy is not required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to contribute money to the decomissioning fund (in preparation for the end of the reactor's working life). What?! Is this an example of the genius of capitalism — where private enterprise works best when voluntary?

Games clearly are being played over the decomissioning fund in Vermont, and perhaps elsewhere.

Joanne Lind
EDF member
Sociologist, Amherst, MA

I have just seen the dvd "A Crude Awakening," and can imagine that economic upheaval following "peak oil" could make the fine plans for decomissioning and nuclear cleanup a pipe dream –

In a time when there is so much talk about humans and our destructive ways, one wonders if the "Power of One" can really have any effect on such a major force as Global Warming … well, everything that I do day in and day out, starts with me. If I make a change in a habit, in a behavior, in how I treat someone or something … I can make a difference! My goal is to have more people realize that 'YES', each one of us has an effect of the whole. As a High School Principal, my leadership and the example that I set, will show both students and staff what I stand for and what I believe in. My simple donation today is another start to help the overall whole!

Truth be told. It was the polar bear with her cubs. They get me everytime, like the end of '"It's a Wonderful Life".

I believe that the threat of Global Warming undermines and negates any other positive social, cultural, or political progress that we might make until there is a globally instituted policy to change, monitor, and maintain envirnmental co-existence.

To the nay-sayers, when was it not the goal and proper place of the United States to lead the world in technological advances in science and mechanics. Why do we need a threat to punctuate our drive to find a better, more efficient, healthier way to live. Since the first day of the internal cumbustion engine, there should have been scientists fighting to make a 100-mile per gallon of water vehicle, simply because that is what we are about. We are first. We are the best. We lead the world in that which is right and expected under God; by watever name he might be called.

One sunset over L.A. is proof enough that, if we are not endangering the global environment, we are certainly damaging our local environment, and those organisms (mainly us) that live within it. Aren't our parents and our children's health enough reason to change?
And, is burying trash in the ground the paramount of technological advancement?

We can and must always look to be better than we are today?

I was inspired to donate to Environmental Defense's year-end matching funds campaign because I believe very strongly about saving the planet for ALL living things. All living things have a purpose–that's what balance in nature means. When nature becomes unbalanced in one part of the world, it can affect everyone. For example, as the rain forests disappeared, weather patterns steadily changed and became unpredictable and storm intensities increased. Without a liveable environment all other issues are moot. We must take serious steps to reverse global warming, which includes looking at the issue of human overpopulation.

Comment from Sandi, NY

I'm not big on New Year's Resolutions since I think one should try to improve themselves all year long. But after seven years of Bush & Co, it's imperative that American citizens start taking responsibility for how we wound up here. We must speak out, we must act, we must stand up for what we value most. Reducing global warming and protecting our planet is the most dire issue we face today, which is why I decided to give again this year to the Environmental Defense fund.

Comment from Meredith B., Midland, TX

Dealing with climate change, which, in truth, should not be classed solely as an environmental issue (though it is indeed the greatest environmental threat facing the planet) but as one of both national and global security, will take dedication and sacrifice not only in 2008 but every year for decades to come. America must join with the other nations in the world to fight this threat. Thanks for working to that end, Environmental Defense.

I feel like this is a critical time in our history, a turning point for our planet. Either we all will start caring about the planet and everything in it and learn to coexist, or will have to learn to live with contaminated water, continued sickness from chemicals tearing us up, loss of species and habitats, and possible destruction of earth as our home as we know it.
