I am really, really concerned that we might be headed the wrong direction. My Uncle is a physicist who charts the effects of space polution for NASA . . . that's right, space polution! He tells me that even the slightest change in the density of space makes a huge change in how much sunlight reaches our sweet Gaia.

Now he tells me that we are moving into a part of our Galaxy that has a lot more space dust and is denser. He explains it like this. Normally space has three to six hydrogen atoms per cubic kilometer. And tiny, tiny dust particles amount to approximately 1 cubic meter per 100,000 cubic meters.

The part of our galaxy we are entering has six to ten hydrogen atoms per cubic kilometer and 2.5 cubic meters of dust.

The normal temperature of space is 2º Kelvin. Our planet's normal surface temperature is approximately 20º Kelvin. The surface of the sun is approximately 5800º Kelvin and is 93 Million miles away. That means if space is getting twice as poluted about 0.00003% of the light from the sun will be blocked. Thats a difference of 1.7º Kelvin and we are just now entering the zone. It will get a lot worse as we push further into this arm of our galaxy.

He's telling me that the reason for ice ages is dirty space. He says that Sun Spots have more to do with climate change than CO2 and he says that ash from 3rd world countries is worse yet.

He says that hydrogen will add watervapor to the atmosphere and that watervapor reflects 27 times as much sunlight as CO2 traps.

Help me out here. I'm just a poor little rich kid, he's a physicist working for NASA. How do I convince him that global warming is a real danger?

Thanks for the comment. I'll refer you to another post on Grist, by David Hawkins of NRDC. He did a nice job of responding to Joe Romm's critique of the USCAP blueprint.

However this doesn't address the earlier article in Grist http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2009/1/15/9614/32464
which comments on some of the weakpoints in USCAP. Please address your rational for letting industry off the hook so much.
